Re: Poll: Choose your least favorite Linux distribution
My least favorite is nUbuntu.
- Devels are none-sense
- The installer is too minimalist
- Most of the software is *OLD* out of the box
- The user password is the same as root's password which is NOT secure
Linux is about choice.
Free software is about choice.
NUbuntu's design philosophy is reducing user's choice.
Which is against free software philosophy.
Ubuntu's design philosophy is AWFUL.

Re: Poll: Choose your least favorite Linux distribution
i dont have experience with any distro other than ubuntu fedora and debian
i also didnt liek fedora becuase i couldnt find out, as a noob how to get any mp3s or dvds to play, without going to livna, where i would download a package, and then have to separately download and install the dependencies, it was not very user friendly to a noob like me at the time, it all just seemed unnecassary
ubuntu doesnt have to be a distribution for everyone, i dont agree with their philosophy after working with debian for a while, but the simplicity in it and the good tools for getting everything to work, and mostly everything working right out of the box, i think its a great distribution for beginners
Ubuntu also taught me enough to be able to tackle debian with no problem at all
if someone wants to be a first time user to linux, and doesnt really care to learn that much, we shouldnt shut them out just because the arent as "31337" as us or because they are a n00b

I understand you're point of view tonite*.
From a technical point of view, Ubuntu sucks.
And isn't that easy from Fedora.
BTW, i don't use Fedora, and i still think i'm god so fuck off.

Re: Poll: Choose your least favorite Linux distribution
I chose Ubuntu.
It is a fork, and with forks come alterations and modifications not found in mainstream distributions, meaning Gentoo, Fedora/RHEL, Debian and Slackware.
Forks teach uncommon practices proprietary to that particular distribution, while not everything may be different, it is easier to learn a fork, than to unlearn a fork, especially any of them which give the appearance to be "easier" for "newbs".
I started using Linux with Slackware.
I like Fedora/RHELs design goals and they are constantly pushing out new technology faster than any other distribution, while Gentoo may also be on that same path.
These aspects give way to bug reporting, and feature requests which eventually make it into other distributions which use older software.
I think any distribution which ships with anything prorietary or copyright, has the potential to become a legal risk when distributing.
Fedora is free from that, and can be shipped anywhere in the world.
If the previous poster's comments are correct in that "Everything woks out of the box with Ubuntu", he is probably referring to external packages which may need installation on another system, which causes Ubuntu to become a potential, illegal item in some countries, depending on teh exact nature of the software provided and the patents, laws or other aspects regarding infringements and things.
In my experience, starting off using mainstream distributions is the best way to learn a system, than to start with a fork. While learning may not be someone's goal to use Linux, it cannot be avoided really.
No matter what Linux distribution you use, you will be required to learn something about it, even if it is Ubuntu.

I don't think starting off with a Mainstream distro is really necessary.
Sure it's a good advice for ones who comes from Windows.
Someone who has previous knowledge about *NIX won't feel threatened by distros such as LFS.
Starting off with LFS can be a GREAT way of learning linux.
But if you come from an OS such as Windows, and have no previous *NIX knowledge (excluding OS x) it can be some of the most painful experience.
And some forks are great, such has slamd64 and slax.
I would recommend slax to any newbies who feels threatened by installing to a hard drive.
T2 is kind of a fork from ROCK linux, and T2 is a great distro. (T2 existed BEFORE Gentoo)
I don't see why newbies shouldn't start with a fork.
Or is a fork a xbased distro that sucks?
Ubuntu newbies tends to see *NIX forums as tech support.
Maybe that is why they don't feel the need for learning how linux works internally.

You're not only not touching upon the sole purpose why forks are not good, you go on to ask this:

Now think long and hard, and answer the real issue I already made very clear in my post:
1) What attributes, that are only seen in a forked distribution, which differ from thier counterpart mainstream distributions which they were modeled after, is applicable across any Linux, if even only one other than the fork it's self?

IT isn't an issue of need, it's an issue of want.
New users are persuaded to believe that Ubuntu may be easier to use or learn, which is not the case.
Forks teach unusable and non-applicable practices which do not apply to other distributions nor it's counterpart mainstream distribution which it was modeled after.

I voted Ubuntu only because Mandrake/Mandriva isn't on there.

I have not found a way to modify existing poll items which have already been posted. When I created the first poll which is this poll's counterpart, the max items list was set to 10, this has been fixed and set to 20, but votes already existed.
I used the same 10 items in this poll to keep it consistent, I will post in the suggestion forum about seeing if we cannot allow a way to modify existing posted polls, to at least add items.
