Outlaw Tech Journal beta #1

O.T.G.0.9

1/10/92

OTG will attempt to explore and cultivate sciences and culture which
could or have been over looked by the mainstream.

I have realized magazines are most certainly an example of our
disposable society. It is easy for me to buy a magazine and receive
quick information. It is unfortunate that this is so superficial, it
causes me to wonder how intelligent the intellectual oriented
publications are. It is depressing that advertisements are becoming so
underhanded in there quest to sell sell sell. It is good that it is
becoming possible for anyone to produce there own publications. The
"desktop" age, is a benefit to those who before were unable to express
themselves in media they before could not afford. There is the
arguement that the desktop age is a scam just utilizing techknowledgy
that exists and giving people a reason to buy something. And there is
the arguement that having such a masive amount of people buying into a
trend that is so anti environment/progress is a detriment, but I
figure Jon Q is in a better position whenever he is permitted another
conduit to communicate by.

If something is done simply for monetary reasons it is oviosly not
best for mankind. Is consumerism good for mankind? It gives one a goal
but it simplifies the world to haves and have nots. Have nots will
always want and it simply will not be possible because the more the
have nots do to consume the more the haves benefit anyway. And the gap
will always exist and as times get tougher by bad decisions on every
level life gets tougher for the have nots. At this low point it may be
better for the have nots to be consumers or they may realize the
futility of life etc. etc. and give up, thus halting the system. The
masses are not very intelligent, an intelligent person never would
take something at face value and would understand the complexities of
what was happening. GO ON FOR PAGE AFTER PAGE OF STUFF THAT MAKES ONE
INTELLIGENT AND THEN SUGGEST: or is the average masses that all though
not versed in every angle of every happening are much more satisfied
with it all. At any rate you can see I value objectivity as
intellegence and when it comes to the big questions I dont have an
answer. But life has been the best in history so I figure either we
all blow up or its utopia in another two hundred years or so. You no
they set back the nuclear clock a quarter second or something. I think
thats very unrealistic seeing as how were all still making nuclear
weapons and the solviet union is crumbling loosining acess to there
secrets and arsenel. I personaly dont believe there will be a nuclear
war but I believe there will be more nuclear explosions on this planet
soon. If anyone knows alot or much about Myoelectrics I welcome any
data.

edITOR (dosent that name, the capitals remind you of a B-movie
Barbarian? I say that in a blah blah blah impersonation.)

I want to do a review section of things that people dont nessarily
have access or knowledge of. Anyone is welcome to send reviews of
anything they think the readers should know about. For the first year
this zine will be in a negative profit margin so there may be no
official payment system but I will try to reward people who have
oviosly benefitied OTG. For this first issue I will review stuff that
has been inspiring or useful to me in the last couple of months.

An ouvious tech book is BUILD YOUR OWN LASER,PHASER,ION RAY GUN &
OTHER WORKING SPACE AGE PROJECTS by ROBERT E. IANNINI (ISBN 0-8306-
0604-1 ,$17.95). The title sayes it all, it has descriptions of how to
construct 24 projects of various applications. It has plenty of
illustrtions but requires moderate knowledge of electronics. I'm not
sure of it's conection to INFORMATION UNLIMITED (has adds in lots of
magazines selling kits to build high-tech projects) but all the
projects transpond to some of INFORMATION's kits so parts aren't tough
to get.

For those of you daunted by the complexities of electronics but realy
would like to learn you can go to RADIO SHACK and get GETTING STARTED
IN ELECTRONICS(cat. 276-5003). Its 128 pages of the basics in the most
basic terms and 100 circuit diagrams fully illustrated and very cheap
as well as references to one of americas easiest sources of
components.

STAR TREK THE NEXT GENERATION TECHNICAL MANUAL by RICK STERNBACH and
MICHAEL OKUDA (ISBN 0-671-70427-3 ,$13.00) is an in depth look at the
theories behind the TV show's techknowledgy. It is the highest quality
book of its type and recomended to anyone who wants to know how the
warp coils or phasers work. It has depthy explinations and
illustrations defining how everything works in the "next generation".
Based on scientific principles the authors atempt to explain the
fanasies from the last twenty five years of STAR TREK and make it all
seem believable. Fans will be thrilled sceptics will be impressed.

ALIEN III by William Gibson although not official in print Gibson's
reputaion has made this rejected script a popular item in the cyber-
cicuit. It really dosen't measure up to the first to films its more a
composite of the two and completely different from the final film. It
reminds me a bit of STAR TREK 6 which may have something to do with
its demise, it draws a strong paralell to the US's citizens
relationship with the USSR's citizens and there underlying humanities.
Although for the most part I would call it a shoot-em-up in a space
station filled with mutant ALIENS.

Syd Mead is one of if not the most knowen futurist in the film
buisness if not the world. After his work on BLADE RUNNER and TRON I
think he took part in inspiring my generation. His uterly intelegent
and his geometric perfections are a delight to study and think about
and now he has releaced another collection of his painting in the "'92
OBLAGON CALENDAR". "The 9"x12" full color calendar contains twelve
fantasy illustations plus a specially commisioned 12"x18" centerfold".
With concept work for TOYOTA MOTORS to INTERVIEW MAGAZINE. Avalible
from OBLAGON 1716 North Gardner Los Angeles,CA 90046.

Another futurist/cartoonist I think of after SYD MEAD (and RON COBB)
is MAKOTO KOBYASHI who occationaly blatintly "borrows" MEADS designs
but alwase creates fantasticly intresting work. A member or Xmember of
ART MIC (BUBBLE GUM CRISIS, MADOX 01, MEGA ZONE 23) KOBYASHI has had
numerous books devoted to his ideas including CITIES IN LABRINTH,
PSYBER COMICS #3, HYPER WEAPON And mulitudes of DRAGONS HEAVEN books.
He has had series in B-CLUB and HOBBY JAPAN which has been parcialy
compiled in TWO FACTORY (ISBN4-89189-337-0 c0076 JAPANESE 1800yen).
TWO FACTORY is devoted half to MAKOTO KOBAYASHI and half to KOW
YOKOYAMA and highlights both there careers. KOW YOKOYAMA is another
great Japanese talent and has done SF3D models and HOBBY JAPAN and B-
CLUB series as well as multitudes of models and illustrations for such
clients as LOG-IN(japanese computer magazine) and POCARI SWEET
(japanese soft drink). Both of these artists have had many models and
garage kits releaced legaly and illegaly based on there designs. I
will do bios on both these artists eventualy.

ITS GRIM UP NORTH:JAMS

I was a little displeased with this twelve inch. After BUILD A FIRE
and THE MAN I expected a nice eerie/blarny piece to welcome the
winter. Instead we get a insturmental with an ocational list of towns
in northern england. I guess it could have been expected after
repeated statements that there next album THE BLACK ROOM would be
techno metal. And from the sound of this single techno metal is a
cross of industrial and anolog sounds FX'ed into a dance hit. Not to
say this will be the smash the previous four KLF/TIMELORDS singles
were. I think that budgeting is causing problems in pressing and
distribution. My copy is low quality and the UK promo (releaced in
spring(grey vinal one side)) is only a bit better. The JAMS have a
history of "questionable" releaces, short supply and multiple formats
have only caused this band to rise to legendary status among
collectors. But after all of this for those who have followed the JAMS
will not regret for a moment taking the next step on BILL&JIMMY's
legacy.

Look out for lots more JAMS text later.

Computer pictures claims to be the only corperate computer graphics
magazine, It is a corperate computer graphics magazine. It covers
everything out there PC to CGI. Computer Pictures is distributed by
Montage Publishing, Inc. 25550 Hawthorne Blvd., Suite 314, Torrance,
CA 90505 $40.00a year. Computer Images Monthly is on the same slant
but a bit larger but Pixel Vision (154 W 57th,#832,NY,NY 10019. is
still my favorite because of its artistic side.

Zero I chirped displacently, one he sighed half hartedly. Zeros and
ones went on for a few more minutes,we were tired though, In reality
that was the point, to keep ourselves awake. Kern was driving I was
passengering(quite well) at 4:00am I was tired but for there the sake
of our lives I elected to help keep Kern awake. It wasen't as if we
were facing any real danger except oviously if the driver fell asleep
we would not be well off. We were quite satisfied this had been our
first night out PROCURING and we felt it was a night we would remember
til at least the following week. The back of the compact car was
filled with all sorts of high tech stuff. I was most intrigued by the
neumatic pistons and Kern had taken a fancy to the caces of raw hard
disks and a CRT. The pistons were luck we had been driving along a
side road in the first hours of the adventure when we past a firm we
had heard of. Wee headed for the trash bins(the only parcialy
ligitement place to be). Low and behlod(what ever that means) we hit a
jack pot. About 400 cubic feet of robotics parts and old manufacturing
devices lay in a semi organized refuse/salvage area along the west
wall. We were extremely cautious, although we had done this for a hour
or two already we still realized we were trespassing. In a normal
place 1:00 or 2:00am would be a ligitiment garbrge rumaging time but
where we were, the whole city in fact was industry and a plant not
opperating twenty four hours per day was not at peek eficiancy. So
needless to say there were people about and I had a frightened way
about me. I had been arested before and been a type a reformee, I
conformed rather than rebeling. Kern on the other hand had lead a
sheltered life and never been in trouble before and he was strangly
brave, it wasn't until some people were spotted taling by a door only
about twelve feet from us that he finaly took refuge among the parts
with a parcialy fearful leap. The people did not see us and soon they
dis banded. we took alot and left (cop out by the author).

Originaly I was going to write a piece about the joys of corperate
refuse but after reading Cyberpunk I guess everyone knows about
trashing (garbology) so oh well. Take hardware not paperwork and say
your collecting parts for a music video or sculpture or the like. We
got away with it multipile times.

Various bits

to find rust for your thermite a simple railroad spike works great.
There easy to pull from rail road ties with a verticle heave. I guess
1 out of 15 is going to be removeable. After that, well there must be
ten or twenty docs floating around.

If scrape a penny on the sidewalk so that one side is flat and about
10 percent less in diameter (the diameter of a dime on that axis) and
then rub the faces a bit (this opperation should take about two
minutes). Now drop the penny into the dime slot of a parking meter and
voila fully paid, once in a while you only get a fraction and even
rarer you get nothing. Just premake them and theyll pay off. The
reason a write this is because it is the best method, I have heard
others but they do not function as well.

The theory of electro magnetic levitation via a ion stream fired
through a ring magnet so that the ions charge a controled surface with
a positive charge and then the positive side of the magnet is face
down dosent function as well as it could. I welcome anyones findings
in this enormously simple hover system.

Ive seen people tip a soda machine at about a 20 degree a angle and
get a free pop out of it. and then buyy one and then tip the machine
and get another and so on. NEAT?

SO AT ANY RATE. this is sort of a demo version so far. This particular
releace is in ascci for screaming electron. The final releace will be
on a amiga floppy format and perhaps a video tape version as well. My
primary holdups for relecing the full version involve development of
mass low cost read once media. It sounds easy but I didnt mention the
on zero budget part. I would like any comments or leads people have
sent to elmedine at screaming electron. Another topic Im looking for
more information on is Electro Cranial Stimulation, perticularly
schematics for the black box that peter townsend reportedly used to
kick his drug habit. I have read many indirect articles on the subject
of artificial endorphyn stimulation nobody ever gives any figures, soo
if anyone has any info please, send it. Put it in the files section
and just drop us a note well down load it. You know while Im thinking
of it the outlaw techknowledgy group met every week in berkeley until
we started moving away and losing energy, but if anyone out there is
in the vacinity is interested in a meeting we are thinking of starting
up again if we get any responce. We mostly just talk about and build
hardware hacks but most certinly were looking to do more. So if this
sounds interesting...
