Unjust Laws

America, the beautiful, America the Free. Does that not sound familiar to most Americans' ears? Well, a lot of things in America are beautiful, but there are some things that are not as free. When are founding fathers wrote the Declaration of Independence it guaranteed the right to do a lot of things. It stated that we Americans could enjoy the simple liberties that all men and women should have. They fought long and hard to make their dreams come to reality. We all should have these freedoms, but some politicians on Capital Hill want to deprive us Americans of our rights. These politicians promote the fiction that drug laws help and more drug laws would help more. They all stand guilty of fostering public hysteria about drugs. Such as the issue of illegal narcotics.

In all and all, the drug laws are hurting more people then the drugs themselves. The intellectual establishment already knows that drug laws do not work and are counterproductive. Such as gang wars and the number of gang shoot outs when civilians were maimed or killed. The way gangs get their funds to buy the guns they need to control that section of a city is by the dealing of illegal drugs. If drugs were legal, the average person could walk into a corner store and by a bag of weed like it was a pack of cigarettes or a pack of gum. They wouldn't have to go to a dealer and purchase it illegally.

If the government was smart it would see that it could profit a lot from the sale of drugs. Just like they have from the sale of tobacco products. The government could control it just like tobacco companies. If they would just put heavy taxes on it they would make a huge profit and be making Americans happy at the same time. With the increased income from taxes, we could make our military forces stronger and keep our borders safe from foreign invaders. Also, the surplus could be spent on medical insurance for children whose parents can't afford it. These are just a few of the many ways we could spend the extra money from the sales tax of drugs. There are some bad effects in America that can happen because of these current drug laws. Increased drug addictions, STD's, crime, and health care expenses. Drug addicts are in my opinion are the worst part of society. Sexually transmitted disease is a horrible way to die. Crime might go up because of the addiction and the need for the drug. Most health care expenses are a little pricey and it would not be good to for them to go up.

Drug laws can turn what may be a personal tragedy into a criminal catastrophe. Both drug users and drug haters would be better off if drugs were decriminalized drugs all together. In contrast, Ron Paul, the 1988 Libertarian Party Presidential candidate, opposes drug laws. A few brave politicians such as Baltimore Mayor Kurt L. Schmoke support him. More politicians would join with them if they did not fear public censure. We Americans must see that drug laws are just a way the government can collect criminals, collect fines, and fill up our jails.
