Happy Father's Day! by David Minter. (MegaMan)

"Happy Father's Day!"

Finished 6-16-95 by David Minter.

Mega Man and prominent characters @1995 Capcom.

Note: I've chosen to use Dr. Light's name from the first
Mega Man game, Dr. Wright. It was the one we were
introduced to first in the United States and I like it
better than Dr. Light or Dr. Right.

"What on Earth is-" Dr. Xavier Thomas Wright was
stunned when he turned on the light in his laboratory.
There was a gigantic box in the center, covered with red
paper and a large ribbon tied around the top of it. He
cautiously circled the box, making note of its dimensions.
After careful examination, the results of Mill's methods
of scientific investigation yielded only one possible
result as to what the strange object might be; the ribbon
gave it away.

"A bow. It's some kind of present." He took one end
of the bow and paused momentarily. It could easily be a
trap set by Dr. Wily, his one-time laboratory assistant
but now crazed would-be world conqueror. If it were a
trap, Mega could take care of it, he rationalized as he
tugged on the ribbon. The bow came undone and slid around
the edges of the box. The top popped open, tearing the
paper around it. The wrapping fell aside and the sides
burst away, revealing two robots inside! Dr. Wright
jumped back, prepared for the worst...

"HAPPY FATHER'S, DAD!" the two mechanoids said in
unison. Several panels opened up in the ceiling.
Balloons, streams, confetti, and music began to fill the
air. Mega and Roll held out their arms to hug their
creator. Dr. Wright, rightly stunned at first, realized
what it was all about and entered the embrace of his
children. Dr. Wright stepped back and admired his kids.
Mega was dressed differently today. He had his helmet off
and his artificial brown hair was exposed. "Mega, what is
it? Why have you not your helmet on?" "Please, Dad. For
today, this day, Father's Day... your day, it's Rock."
"Okay... Rock." "I would have dressed up too, but you

already me like this," Roll chimed in. "I couldn't go
around nude!" They all laughed at that prospect.

"Why, I am so very grateful to the both of you, but
why did you do this?" Dr. Wright asked them, waving his
hand in the air. "It's Father's Day," Roll said. "And
you are our dad, Dad. You programmed us to be as human as
possible, and this is our way of showing you the fruits of
your genius." Dr. Wright was almost at the point of
tears. This alone, let alone the successes of Rock and
Roll in the eyes of men, was prove enough that his
experiment had succeeded! Man and machine could live
together in harmony for the betterment of both. "I love
you two so very much!" At that, almost as if he was
trying not to be forgotten, Rush flew into the room in his
jet sled mode. He transformed to canine and barked,
"Ruff, ruff, Father's Day, ruff!" He leapt onto Dr.
Wright's chest, forcing him to the floor. He began
furiously licking his creator's face. Dr. Wright
initially resisted, but then let go to the feelings of
happiness and began laughing loudly and longly into the
air. Rock and Roll scrambled down to the floor with them,
joining in the frivolity.

Dr. Albert W. Wily sat skulking in his Skull Castle.
He was watching his initial creation, Protoman, in one of
his moods again. Protoman brought his fist down and
crushed one of Wily's latest creations. "But I get to
destroy my brother! I WILL NOT LET THAT ABOMINABLE
DOPPLEGANGER KEEP DEFYING ME!" He turned and pointed
towards his father. "And, I will not let you do it,
either!" His fist sank into his forearm and his Proto
Buster slid into its place. Dr. Wily ducked as the
crystalline blast smashed the view screen above him.
Several of Wily's robots entered the lab at the commotion.
Protoman quickly spun around and shattered Cutman's head
with his blast. The decapitated robot fell forwards to
the floor. "Contain him," Dr. Wily calmly ordered,
pointing at Protoman. Hard Man jumped into the air and
fell into the rabid robot. "Pile on top of him!" Gutsman
chimed in as he fell onto the mass. After several more
robots joined in, Protoman finally stopped.

Gravity Man activated a low level localized density
shield around Protoman, preventing him from moving. "Take
him to holding. I'll de-program the rage out of him
later." But Dr. Wily knew it wouldn't last. He could
only temporarily remove the anger from Protoman. He had
made him too well, too human. He could erase the memories
of the past few moments, but the backups of Protoman's
personality tapes would restore themselves in due time.

And Protoman himself had made sure that Dr. Wily could not
change those codes. Bubble Man created a, what else,
bubble around the now denser Protoman and led them both
away. "Put Cutman on the table." Gutsman gently heaved
the beheaded robot body over his shoulder and carried it
over to Dr. Wily's workbench. He actually cared somewhat
for Cutman; you hardly ever see one without the other.
"Go guard over Protoman just to make sure that he doesn't
enrage his way back out." Gutsman left Dr. Wily to his
machinations.

Dr. Wily scooped up the remnants of Cutman's head and
carted them over to Cutman's body. He started the slow
process of rebuilding Cutman once again. He was working
at a melancholy pace. He knew what day it was, and he was
sure Protoman knew it, too. While he didn't want Protoman
to get all mushy ( That is not the way of the machine. ),
he had hoped that his creation would have at least kept
his temperment towards his counterpart under control.
Heaven forbid that he might actually acknowledge the fact
that he was his creator on this day. As he became lost in
the own commonplace work of rebuilding his robots, he got
a strange thought. The almost human creations of Dr.
Wright, that of Rock, Roll, and Rush, were probably all
celebrating Father's Day together like the miserably happy
beings that they were. Dr. Wily forced down the sadness.
He had a war to win, to eliminate all flesh and the ways
thereof. However, he simply couldn't help the fact that
he had wanted to hear those words. "Happy Father's Day...
Dad..."
