Homophobia: Why Straights Hate Fags

HOMOPHOBIA
----------
Why Do "Straight" Guys Fear Us?

Uploaded to Pink Triangle by Andy McDonald

Homophobia (from the Greek words homos meaning 'same' - in
this sense as in same-sex - and phobos meaning 'fear') is a term
used to explain the attitude adopted by certain sectors of
society towards homosexuals.

Although the term also applies to lesbians, it would be fair
to say that in the majority of instances it is the male
homosexual who suffers most from homophobia. Let's face it, few
gay guys have been lucky enough never to have suffered taunts
such as "pouf", "faggot" and "queer".

Public humiliation is used as a form of castigation, a
verbal form of punishment for daring to be a little bit different
than the "norm". But what is normal? Is it more natural for a
man to be attracted to a woman than to another man? In nature,
homosexuality abounds, wild creatures being free to express their
emotions and arousals in a blatant, unashamed way, while we poor
humans must conduct ourselves "behind closed doors".

Amongst the wild Gibbons which live on the Rock of
Gibraltar, a subservient male will offer its rear to any
stronger, more powerful male as an act of appeasement to prevent
a fight. And haven't we all seen some dog in the street mounting
another dog when there wasn't a bitch handy? Such acts among
animals are inspired by hormones and the sense of pleasure sexual
arousal brings, not, as homophobes would like to imply, because
of a deviant and sick mentality.

In ancient Greece homosexuality was considered a 'privilege'
for a select few to enjoy. Elder statesmen, high state
officials, rich businessmen and Olympic athletes were allowed to
take a young man to bed, while such luxuries were strictly
forbidden to the poor and slaves (another form of discrimination
perhaps?). In fact, Olympic athletes were actually encouraged to
take male lovers, and the younger they were the better!
Paedophiles eat your heart out!

As a practising homosexual (isn't that an odd phrase...
makes it sound like you're not very good at it!) I find the
recent upswing in homophobia quite distressing and more than a
little bit alarming. AIDS certainly hasn't done much for the Gay
community, although AIDS cannot be blamed for the inherent
prejudice felt by some members of the straight society.

There is one particular type of guy who is the stereo-typed
homophobe: married with 2.5 kids, usually does some form of
'heavy' work (a Man's job!), likes nothing better than going down
the pub with his macho mates, gets legless, and then staggers
home to screw the missus! Homosexuals are queers, perverts who
like to molest small boys, and should be castrated and locked up!

This attitude raises several points to consider. Why should
it be assumed a homosexual is a molester of little boys? Are all
heterosexual men out to assault the first pre-pubescent girl they
meet? And why the assumption that heavy labour is something only
straight guys are capable of? I once had a boy- friend who was
over 6', 13 stone and muscular (he was also a policeman), and I
can tell you he very rarely got any hassle.

Some gays are effeminate and slender, others butch and
hunky. Is a gay transvestite any less of a man than a butch,
leather-clad gay? Of course not. And to take the argument one
step further... if two guys work side by side at the same job,
one gay and the other straight, is the gay guy any less of a man
than his partner? No way.

But such reasoning is beyond the scope of queer-bashing
homophobes, many of whom would kill if they were accused of being
gay. To some, the hatred of gays is almost pathological in its
intensity and is totally irrational. Even the homophobes
concerned aren't able to explain just why they dislike gays to
such a degree, especially as most of them have no active contact
with the gay community.

Perhaps the secret lies in the lives lived by homosexuals.
Gay guys may have partners with whom they share a home, but in
general there is none of the "heavy" responsibility which goes
with marriage and kids, and that is not meant to suggest gays are
irresponsible in any way.

Gay guys have more fun and usually know how to let their
hair down better than straight guys, and most gays tend to take
better care of themselves, keeping in shape and dressing well.

Given the opportunity of being either a scruffy, hung-up
straight guy laden with responsibilities or a smart, happy go
lucky free gay guy, which would YOU choose?

Right - ME TOO!
