Slasher book bibliography
I came up with this while learning to use a database program.
It's a bibliography of what are euphemistically called "true
crime" books--that is books about serial killers, mass murderers
and so on. I've read most of these books and I've added some
comments about them.
TED BUNDY
If not the top serial killer, Ted is one of the best known
and best loved ones.
?; The Phantom Prince
She lived with Bundy.
Larsen, Richard W.; Bundy: The Deliberate Stranger
Michaud, Steven and Aynesworth, Hugh; The Only Living Witness
Rule, Anne; The Stranger Beside Me
She knew Bundy.
Winn, Steven and Merrill, David; The Killer Next Door
JACK THE RIPPER
What can you say about Jack. A legend in his own, and
any other, time.
Begg, Paul; Jack the Ripper--The Uncensored Facts
Not exciting but more accurate than others.
Harrison, Michael; Clarence
A theory. Ho hum.
Knight, Stephen; Jack the Ripper--The Final Solution
Blather.
Rumbelow, Donald; The Complete Jack the Ripper
Spiering, Frank; Prince Jack
Another theory. Ho ho hum hum.
MANSON FAMILY
Charlie gets a lot more credit than he deserves, so he
must have something going for him.
Atkins, Susan; Child of Satan, Child of God
Not very trustworthy. She's much more interesting as a child
of Satan. More of the book is about that.
Bishop, George Vincent; Witness to Evil
A waste of time.
Bugliosi, Vincent and Gentry, Curt; Helter Skelter
Emmons, Nuel; Manson in His Own Words
The Holy writings.
Gilmore, John and Kenner, Ron; The Garbage People
Has some stuff on Manson's background that others don't have.
Livsey, Clara; The Manson Women
The author is a terminal normal. Too bad, it could have been
an interesting book.
Sanders, Ed; The Family
The best Manson book.
Schreck, Nikolas; The Manson File
Watson, Charles (Tex); Will You Die For Me?
Probably fairly reliable, even though Watson became a Christer.
Zaehner, R. C.; Our Savage God
Only partly about Manson. Dumb.
CULTS
Humes, Edward; Buried Secrets
About the Matamoros killings.
Kahaner, Larry; Cults That Kill
Credulous dork.
Linedecker, Clifford; Hell Ranch
More Matamoros stuff.
Raschke, Carl; Paint it Black
This guy is a jerk.
Terry, Maury; Ultimate Evil
Maybe you believe it. He ties Son of Sam with Manson and a
ring of Satanists from North Dakota.
SERIAL KILLERS
Baldwin, James; The Evidence of Things Not Seen
A well-written but pointless essay about the Atlanta child-
killer.
Biondi, Ray and Hecox, Walter; All His Father's Sins
Blackburn, Daniel J.; Human Harvest
Burn, Gordon; Somebody's Husband, Somebody's Son
The Ripper tradition lives on in the Yorkshire Ripper
Cahill, Tim; Buried Dreams
About John Wayne Gacy.
Cameron, Deborah and Frazer, Elizabeth; Lust to Kill
Basically feminist bullshit but some is okay.
Caputi, Jane; The Age of Sex Crime
Feminist bullshit.
Carpozi, George Jr.; Son of Sam: The .44 Caliber Killer
Cook, Thomas H.; Early Graves
Dettlinger, Chet; The List
Egginton, Joyce; From Cradle to Grave
Dead babies.
Elkind, Peter; Death Shift
More dead babies.
Gaddis, Thomas E. and Long, James O.; Killer: A Journal of Murder
Graysmith, Robert; The Sleeping Lady
Not as good as his book about Zodiac.
Graysmith, Robert; Zodiac
The one and only.
Howard, Clark; Zebra
Black Muslims get crazy.
Kolarik, Gera-Lind and Klatt, Wayne; Freed to Kill
Levin, Jack and Fox, James Alan; Mass Murder: America's Growing Menace
Light-duty
Leyton, Elliot; Hunting Humans
I don't buy his theory.
Linedecker, Clifford; The Man Who Killed Boys
Gacy again.
McDougal, Dennis; Angel of Darkness
Randy Kraft--possibly the record body count.
Norris, Joel; Serial Killers
I don't buy his theory.
O'Brien, Darcy; Two of a Kind
Hot stuff! The Hillside Stranglers.
Reed, Dan and Moore, Kelly; Deadly Medicine
Yet more dead babies.
Reynolds, Richard B.; Cry For War
This pair is truly nuts.
Rule, Anne (Andy Stack); Lust Killer
Rule, Anne (Andy Stack); The I-5 Killer
Rule, Anne (Andy Stack); The Want-Ad Killer
Sullivan, Terry and Maiken, Peter T.; Killer Clown
They try to excuse it taking so long to catch Gacy
Van Hoffman, Eric; A Venom in the Blood
Wambaugh, Joseph; The Blooding
This one's great
MISCELLANEOUS
Alexander, Shana; Nutcracker
One messed up family.
Bledsoe, Jerry; Bitter Blood
What a pair!
Bradlee, Ben Jr. and Van Atta, Dale; Prophet of Blood
Ervil Le Baron--the Mormon Manson.
Carpenter, Teresa; Missing Beauty
Irving, Clifford; Daddy's Girl
I don't buy Irving's explanation.
James, P. D. and Critchley, T. A.; The Maul and the Pear Tree
Levy, Steven; The Unicorn's Secret
Live with a corpse for a year?
Lindsey, Robert; A Gathering of Saints
McGinniss, Joe; Blind Faith
Apt title.
McGinniss, Joe; Fatal Vision
McKernan, Maureen; The Amazing Crime Trial of Leopold and Loeb
The two and only.
Naifeh, Steven and Smith, Gregory White; The Mormon Murders
Olsen, Jack; Cold Kill
Olsen, Jack; Predator
Olsen, Jack; Son: A Psychopath and His Victims
Mom got into the act too.
Rule, Anne; Small Sacrifices
Schreiber, Flora Rheta; Shoemaker: The Anatomy of a Psychotic
Schwartz-Nobel, Loretta; Engaged to Murder
She shows the appeal of the psychopath.
Sillitoe, Linda and Roberts, Allen D.; Salamander
St. Clair, David; Say You Love Satan
White punks on dope murder. Big deal.
Thernstrom, Melanie; The Dead Girl
Over-sensitive, uninformative dreck.
Wambaugh, Joseph; Echoes in the Darkness
Good!
Wolfe, Linda; Wasted
The Preppie Killing.
