ThroughACrimsonGlass
Welcome to a new story I've finally completed: Through a Crimson Glass.

What follows is the teaser and part 1 of 10. Part 2 will follow today and
the remainder will be posted through this week.

Feel free to post, repost, retransmit or otherwise fold, spindle or
mutilate, as long as you don't plagerize. Of course, all the characters
within belong to Paramount (etc. usual disclaimer), and please don't get me
in trouble by trying to make money off of this.

Please don't ask for lost sections as I'll repost it later once all the
sections have gone through once. Enjoy...

BTW: This story occurs at some random 7th season date...
____________________________________________________

Through a Crimson Glass, teaser

Open with Enterprise in warp. Pan through to bridge, Riker is at Command,
various Ensigns crew the stations in the average day watch. The ensign at
tactical reports:

Ensign: Commander Riker, we are receiving a distress call from the USS
Wisconsin.

Riker: [to ceiling] Captain to Bridge. [to Tactical] On screen.

The starfield is replaced by a weak and breaking signal from Captain
Abigale Rutgers of the U.S.S. Wisconsin. Behind her, the klaxons sound, and
various crew scuttle around. Picard enters from the Ready Room.

Rutgers: Enterprise, thank God! We're in trouble here. We've had an
expolsion in Engineering. We have nominal control from the bridge, but if
the core goes, I'm not sure if we could dump it from here. We need to get
people off and then try and get things under control.

Picard: Change course to intercept, warp nine. Engage.

Riker: [examing console at Ops] We'll be there in 12 minutes.

Picard: Move everyone into the Saucer section...

Rutgers: Way ahead of you Captain. But, I'm not popping the saucer on my
ship until absolutely necessary.

Cut onto the Wisconsin's Bridge. Bleeps and whistles begin to sound as the
core begins to go up. The Lt. at Ops reports:

Lieutennant: The warp core is begining to breach.

Rutgers: Initiate Saucer separation! Can you eject the core Mr. Crusher?

Pan to back of bridge where Wesley (in red Ensign's uniform) is furiously
attempting to stabilize or eject the core.

Wesley: I can't do it, Captain! It's going to go!

Cut back to the Enterprise. Captain Rutgers, on the screen, reports:

Rutgers: I hope there's something left for you to pick up.

The transmission ceases as the screen cuts to show the Wisconsin (an
Ambassador class vessel). The saucer is separating but is not completely
clear. The Saucer suddenly leaps away from the Stardrive as it explodes in
a huge pyrotechnic display. Cut to close shot of Picard as fade to black.

END TEASER.

Through a Crimson Glass, part 1

Open with shot of Enterprise near the badly charred and unlit Saucer
section of the Wisconsin. The Stardrive section of the Wisconsin hangs
nearby, the section ahead of the nacelles is completely blown away, the
remainder is heavely carbon scored, though hangs together. Picard's log
entry voices over.

Picard: [vo] Captain's Log: stardate 47572.3. We have responded to the
distress of the Wisconsin. The saucer section of the ship has been
stabilized, though the stardrive section is completely lost. Casualties
were high, including much of the Engineering staff and the First Officer.
Initial reports suggest that the warp engines overloaded after prolonged
use at high warp. This is amazing as the engines are supposed to shutdown
long before explosion occurs. I hope that Captain Rutgers has a better
explaination.

Picard's log entry is inturupted by a chime at the door. Captain Rutgers
enters.

Picard: Welcome, Abigale. Have a seat, may I offer you some tea?

Rutgers: Thanks, Jean-Luc. It's good to see you, though I wish the
circumstances were much better. I need to talk to you.

Picard: [returning with the tea] Certainly, what about.

Rutgers: The mission I was on. I need to complete it.

Picard: I don't think you're in condition to complete any mission.

Rutgers: This one is of utmost importance. On our last trip out, we came
across a planet in the Exumerant Cluster, Euonymous 5. There, we found a
pre-industrial stage life form. We didn't have time to study it in detail,
so we set up a probe behind the outer moon to keep an eye on the planet. We
were on out way back to Euonymous 5.

Picard: I'm certian the study of a life form can wait...

Rutgers: No, it can't. Telemetry from the probe has reported a guidance
failure. It is tracking out from behind the moon, and is in a decaying
orbit towards the planet. I was rushing out there to catch the probe before
it fell upon the heads of the Euonymons.

Picard: Thus, the reason for the overload on the warp engines. Do you know
what happened yet? The engines are supposed to automatically shut down
before an explosion occurs.

Rutgers: No. There were some anomalies in the core prior to the explosion.
My First Officer was down there trying to trace the anomaly when the
explosion occured. I was hoping we could get the problems under control
without leaving warp. Even a delay of a few hours could get us to Euonymous
too late.

Picard: What is the current situation of the probe?

Rutgers: The probe is still obscured by the moon, but will be in full view
in 39 hours, striking the planet in 49. We were rushing out there when the
explosion occured. If not for the explosion, we would have made it in time.
Now, I think we could yet manage to stop it from hitting the planet. If
you're willing to take me out there.

Picard: [to ceiling] Picard to LaForge. Mr. LaForge, what's the status of
the Wisconsin?

Geordi: [vo] The damage to the Saucer was worse than I feared, I couldn't
even get the impulse engines up. Don't even ask about the Stardrive
section, I don't want to get anywhere near it. I don't even know what is
holding it together, it should be nothing but debris.

Picard: Thanks, Mr. LaForge. [to ceiling] Picard to Bridge. Are any other
vessels currently responding to the distress signal?

Riker: [vo] Yes, Sir. A Towing Vessel is en route. It is scheduled to
arrive in 5 days.

Rutgers: That's too long!

Picard: I can't just leave it sitting here. It'd be in some Ferenghi market
within hours. Not to mention, we're not that far away from the Neutral
Zone!

Rutgers: We can't let the probe hit the planet! The implications of that
technology on the Euonymnons would be unalterable.

Rutgers pauses and walks over to the window and looks out over the remains
of her ship.

Rutgers: Destroy it.

Picard: Destroy it! Are you mad?

Rutgers: You heard your Chief Engineer, there's nothing worth saving.

Picard: I doubt that Starfleet would look favoribly upon that decision.

Rutgers: I doubt that I'm very high on anyone's list at Starfleet right
now. Please, Jean-Luc. Prime Directive aside, protecting this planet is
essential to me!

Picard pauses, then strolls over to the window behind Rutgers.

Picard: [to ceiling] Picard to LaForge. Mr. LaForge, abandon the Wisconsin.
Complete transfer of remaining logs then return to the Enterprise.

LaForge: [vo] Captain? I...

Picard: I'll explain very soon, proceed with all due haste. [to ceiling]
Mr. Data. Estimated time to the Euonymous System at warp 9.5?

Data: [vo] 37 hours.

Rutgers: Thank God, we still have time.

Picard and Rutgers exit to the bridge. Riker yields Command to Picard.

Picard: Inform me when the last of the crew has left the Wisconsin. Mr.
Worf, prepare a spread of torpedoes to destroy the remains of the
Wisconsin.

Riker: Sir?

Picard: In a moment, Number One. Ensign Ro, set course for Euonymous 5 at
warp 9.5 and prepare to engage as soon as the Wisconsin has been destroyed.

Riker: I must protest, Captain!

Picard: We have a pressing engagement at Euonymous 5, we must get there
within 39 hours. At the same time, we cannot allow the remains of the
Wisconsin to be captured by a Ferenghi or even a Romulan. All will be
explained once we are underway.

Data: Mr. LaForge reports that all crew have abandoned the Wisconsin.

Picard: Mr. Worf.

All bridge crew stand as we cut to space. The Enterprise fires photon
torpedoes which impact upon the Wisconsin's Saucer and Stardrive section
atomizing the remians of the vessel. As the debris clears, the Enterprise
silently jumps into high warp.

END PART ONE.
Here's part 2. Feel free to send comments, complaints, etc.

Note: Because of the presence of 2 Crushers, I was forced to use Wesley and
Beverly instead of using the last name as I did for the others. I mean no
slight or special treatment by using their first names :-)
________________________________________________

Through a Crimson Glass, part 2

Open in Enterprise Conference Room. Usual complement of Picard, Riker,
Data, Troi, Beverly, LaForge, Worf, as well as Captain Rutgers and Ensign
Crusher formerly of the Wisconsin. Wesley is at the front making a report
on the last minutes of the Wisconsin.

Wesley: [in mid-report] So, as expected, I was unable to eject the core due
to the damaged computer connections to Engineering. Yet, I was able to
engage the tractor beams of the Stardrive section to propel the Saucer
section away. The beams being reversed to create a repulsive force as
planned prior to the loss of the core.

Riker: Mr. Crusher, do you have an explanation as to why the original
explosion occurred in Engineering?

Wesley: No, Sir. A Level One Diagnostic was performed on all systems 3 days
ago, and no anomalies were found. An unexpected oscillation began to occur
approximately 3 hours prior to the explosion. Chief Engineer Andrews felt
it was insignificant and had been attempting to track down the source of
the oscillation. Commander Simerson left for Engineering to help him track
it down.

Picard: Where were you when the explosion occurred?

Wesley: I was at the Con, Sir. I was in the middle of my shift.

Riker: How, then, Ensign, did you suddenly become in charge of Engineering?

Rutgers: [interrupting] I'm sure that you're all aware of the special flare
Mr. Crusher has for Engineering. When the explosion occurred, I had
Engineering transferred to the bridge and put Mr. Crusher in charge until
he could be relieved by a member of Engineering. Unfortunately, [pause]
there was no one left in Engineering to relieve him.

Picard: Thank you, Ensign Crusher. Please have a seat. Captain Rutgers,
could you please explain the reason why we are speeding off to Euonymous 5?

Rutgers moves to the front and puts a schematic of the Euonymous System on
the screen. 12 planets circle a binary Red/Blue Star. Euonymous 5 in
highlighted and 4 moons of various sizes circle the planet.

Rutgers: Certainly. Nine months ago, while traversing the Exumerant
Cluster, we came across a life-form on Euonymous 5. Initial scans showed a
technology level of the pre-Industrial/Renaissance stage. We didn't have
time for further study, and thus, we left a probe in orbit behind the far
moon. Late last week, telemetry from the probe indicated a guidance
failure. The probe is currently in a degenerating orbit that will move it
from behind the moon in 38 hours and make it impact the surface in around
48 hours. The implications of such a corruption of the Euonymon Culture are
staggering.

Data: Was it impossible to correct the guidance of the probe from a
distance?

Rutgers: An engineering team was working on it when the explosion occurred,
they had been having very little success. Now, with Captain Picard's
assistance, we are trying to complete this mission. Provided we have no
further interruptions, we should be able to retrieve the probe before it
clears the moon.

Picard: Mr. LaForge, can we expect any further delays?

LaForge: The engines are behaving. With a bit of baby-sitting, we should be
able to maintain this rate of speed for the required 37 hours, longer if
necessary.

Picard: Thus, we'll arrive the morning after next. I'll expect everyone at
their positions at 0700 tomorrow, until then, dismissed.

All get up to leave, as they do, a communicator beep is heard and an Ensign
relays a message from the bridge.

Ensign: [vo] Captain, priority one message from Starfleet.

Picard: Patch it through. Have a seat everyone.

The blank screen is replaced by the visage of Admiral Gabrielle Klaxton.

Klaxton: Good Evening, Captain Picard. Ah, excellent. I see you have
everyone together, that saves me some time. And, Captain Rutgers... we will
speak privately later. [pausing] I have seen your report, Picard, and I am
aware of your circumstances. While I believe that preventing the corruption
of Euonymous 5 is a high priority, I have an equally high priority for you.
We have just received a transmission from Norendra Colony.

Picard: Amazing. We've heard nary a peep from them in, what, 300 years?

Data: 350 years, Sir.

Klaxton: Yes. They wish to speak with the Federation. And, as you are on
the way out there, I want you to pay them a visit.

Rutgers: Surely, you realize that time is of the essence. We don't really
have the time to pay visits.

Klaxton: I strongly suggest that you make time, Captain. For, strategic
reasons, it is important that we have some friends out near Norendra
Colony. Need I mention the absence of a Federation presence in that area.
And, as they have been fickle in their contact with the Federation. I
believe it is of great importance that we speak with them before they
change their mind.

Rutgers: Does the Prime Directive mean nothing to you!...

Rutgers arguments go on in the background as we pan into Picard who sits
quietly in thought. Finally, he raises his hand.

Picard: Excuse me, Captain Rutgers, Admiral. I have an idea. At the current
speed, we will reach Euonymous 5 tomorrow afternoon, in plenty of time to
save the probe. Meanwhile, late tomorrow morning, we will make closest
approach to Norendra Colony. It would only take about 8 hours in a shuttle
to reach the planet.

Klaxton: And who would you suggest would be on that shuttle?

Picard: I imagine that I would be an excellent choice.

Riker: I must protest, Captain. That would be an incredible risk. First in
making the journey, and then once there, you would have no protection.
Perhaps if we separated the Saucer Section and then proceeded with just
the...

LaForge: [interrupting] I wouldn't recommend that, in order to keep us at
high warp for the required time, I needed to wire a lot of the non- and
semi-essential systems through to the Saucer Section fusion generators. We
could be in the same shape as the Wisconsin if we try to get to Euonymous
with just the Stardrive section.

Picard: I believe that a shuttle would be the best option. I think it would
provide adequate protection on Norendra Colony, after all, reports are that
they have regressed back to 19th Century technology. Surely the technology
of a shuttle could match anything they could throw at us.

Klaxton: While I agree that you would be an excellent choice for the
negotiations, I would hope that there would be other options.

Picard: I really believe this is the best plan, though I am willing to
entertain others. We'll sleep on it. And report back to you at 0900
tomorrow.

Klaxton: That would be acceptable. Now, if you would dismiss your crew, I
would like to speak with you and Captain Rutgers in private.

All but Picard and Rutgers file out, follow the crew back onto the bridge.
Data takes the Command seat. Riker, LaForge, Worf, Wesley and Beverly
collect outside the door.

LaForge: It seems like he's made up his mind.

Riker: Yes. Well, unless we come up with something better... [pause] I want
to know everything there is in the computer on Norendra Colony. Mr. Worf,
assess any possible risk that a shuttle may face on such a journey. Doctor,
I realize that records may be scarce, but find out if there may be any
medical risks on the Colony. Mr. Crusher, would you please search the
computers for all the information they have, get Mr. Data to give you a
hand. Let's have a report ready for tomorrow morning.

Wesley: I'd be happy to. [pause] Do you think they're in a lot of trouble?

Riker: Starfleet doesn't look lightly upon the loss of a ship, nor is
Captain Picard off the hook for completing the destruction of that ship.
But, I'm sure they'll both come through alright.

LaForge: Are we still going to play poker tonight?

Riker: I don't see why not. Would you care to sit in, Mr. Crusher?

Wesley: I'd love to.

Fade into Riker's quarters where Riker, LaForge, Beverly, Worf and Wesley
are playing poker. Worf shuffles the cards and deals 5 card draw. Play
continues as the conversation goes on.

LaForge: Well, I'll start out with 5. So, speaking of Norendra Colony, have
you all heard of the Norendra Vampire?

Beverly: I'll call. Vampire? No, I hadn't.

Riker: I'll raise 5 more. Yes, I've heard the stories from the free traders
who visit the colony. But who knows what they might say, they're not the
most reliable sources of info.

Wesley: Didn't a Starfleet vessel go out there a while ago to look in to
it? I think there had been around 70 deaths of young women by mysterious
circumstances. I'll call.

Worf: I'll call as well.

LaForge: The story going around lately is that now over 230 young women
have been found in similar condition. I think that's the reason we're
suddenly hearing from Norendra colony. I'll start again with 10.

Beverly: Too rich for my blood. I fold.

Riker: How appropriate to a vampire discussion. I'll see, and raise 10
more.

Wesley: Uh, I'll call.

Worf: I, too, will call.

LaForge: I'll call you, Riker. Let's see what you got. I've got a straight
to the 10.

Riker: Sorry, Geordi, I've got a full house. Thank you all so much...

Wesley: Sorry, but I've got four twos.

LaForge: Four-of-a-kind! You weren't betting!

Wesley: You and Riker were doing a good job, already. I didn't want to
scare everyone off. I believe it's your deal, Geordi.

Beverly: Oh, when I was a kid, the stories of Dracula gave me the creeps. I
remember having to sleep with my parents the night I first read the
stories.

Worf: The stories of Dracula are quite...quaint, but they pale in
comparison to the Klingon stories of the Quaplickar.

LaForge: I've read the Quaplikar stories, they make Dracula look like Red
Riding Hood.

Worf: Red Riding Who?

LaForge: Nevermind. But really, they're just stories. There's no such thing
as a vampire. It's just one of millions of monster stories invented by
overactive imaginations. Like Bigfoot or the LocNess Monster.

Riker: Oh really? Did I ever tell you I once saw a Sasquatch.

Beverly: I suppose he was having tea with the LocNess Monster.

Worf: What's a Sasquatch? Is it some terran animal?

Riker: No, it's a famous monster from Earth. Sometimes called "Bigfoot" or
"Yeti." It's a large hairy mammal, some think it's an evolutionary relative
of the hominids.

Wesley: I find that highly unlikely, Commander. While sightings have been
reported for 600 years, a specimen has never been found. Besides, in the
mid-22nd century a concerted effort was made to search for such an animal
using what was then state-of-the-art technology, and found nothing of
consequence.

Riker: Yes, but no one thought there was such thing as the mountain
gorrilla until they found one, nor the ceptian baroka, or many other
examples. And besides, I saw one. [pause] It was when I was 12, my Father
and I were camping in Denali park, near Mt. McKinley. It was around dusk,
my Father was gathering firewood in the forest. Across the clearing, a
large hairy beast, a slim 2.5 meters tall walked out of the forest. It was,
in a way, beautiful. It moved with a steady grace; until he saw me anyway.
Once he did, he took of with an impressive burst of speed, regaining the
forest with ease.

Wesley: I must of been your father, playing a trick.

Riker: No, my Father emerged from the woods behind me just as the Sasquatch
re-entered the woods. And remember, Denali is a Wilderness area, access is
severely restricted. There was no one else within 30 km of our campsite.

LaForge: I still don't buy it. Nor, do I believe in this Norendra Vampire.

Wesley: Well, Geordi, when we get to Norendra Colony you can be sure to ask
him. Meanwhile, I'll be the one in the garlic necklace.

Play continues as we pull away, and fade to black.

END PART 2
And on we go... E-mail with any questions, problems...

_______________________________________________
Through a Crimson Glass, part 3

Open in Conference Room of Enterprise. Crew including Rutgers and Wesley
are present. Picard has just completed explaining his plan to visit
Norendra Colony.

Riker: I must again voice my reservations with this plan. [pause] Though, I
must admit, we have turned up nothing that would pose an obvious threat to
you.

Picard: I'm glad to hear it, Number One. Anything I should know?

Data: An extensive computer search turned up remarkably little. The records
start with settlement of the Colony 372 years ago by Terrans of mainly
Eastern European heritage. The main interst of this colony was to remove
themselves from the conditions of Earth at that time, and, in that light,
settled far from any known sector in the Norendra System.

Picard: In the vessels of that time, that journey would have taken years.
Really wanted to get away from it all, it seems.

Wesley: Earth was not the only thing they wanted to get away from. They
felt modern technology was the root of all the problems, and 22 years after
settlement, broke all contact with Earth and reportedly destroyed much of
their technology. Scholars believe an ultra-conservative government seized
power and began a policy of isolation. No contact was made with the colony
for over 180 years.

Data: During that time, the only data we have was gathered by free-traders
who visited the colony. The traders met with very few members of the colony
who acted for the remainder. Most of the trade was for agricultural
products, though some art and precious metals were exchanged.

LaForge: As well as some stories...

Picard: Ah, the "Vampire." One of the better stories I imagine.

Beverly: Not so much a story as one would imagine. The Federation was
contacted 64 years ago to investigate the continuing disappearance of young
women. Just prior to contact, 8 disappearances had occured, and this time,
the bodies had been discovered. It turned out that all had been killed by
exsanguination. The U.S.S. Quioxte visited the colony at that time to
investigate. During the time of their visit, an additional death occured,
and they were able to examine the body. The records show that the neck was
pierced at the coronary artery and the whole of the blood was removed. No
other injuries were discovered, nor had any sedatives been used prior to
exsanguination. The conclusion of the Quioxte was that a native animal was
responsible for the death, though they were unable to locate any such
animal.

Picard: Surely the planet would have been thoroughly searched prior to
settlement.

Riker: This was 380 years ago, requirments were not so strict. Anyway,
reports from the planet suggest that the Vampire has continued to strike.
In fact, it is my assesment that they wish the Federation to take care of
their vampire problem.

Picard: [jokingly] I'm somewhat concerned that you don't consider a vampire
a threat to me, Number One.

Data: The 'Vampire' has shown an interest solely in young women, thus far.
It is unlikely that it would have any interest in you. [pause] No offense,
Sir. [pause] Further, the attacks are quite rare.

Riker: Even though, perhaps you may wish to replicate some garlic before
you leave.

Picard: Thanks for the advice. Mr. Worf, you have been very quiet. Have you
anything to add?

Worf: Should you decide to go through with this, I would recommend that a
full security detail accompany you. Further, I believe a convoy of 2
shuttlecraft should be used to provide cover and backup while you are on
the colony. The distance from the Neutral Zone and from Cardassian space
should allow for a low-risk journey, and no reports of anomalies have been
reported in the area. Though I should warn that this area has not been
thoroughly explored.

Troi: If I may ask, Captain. What did Admiral Klaxton mean when she said
this sector was of strategic importance?

Picard: It is directly between the Federation and Delta Quadrant, the
putative home of the Borg. [pause] I imagine the only reason Norendra
Colony still exists is due to their forsaking of technology. [pause] But
that is not our concern at the moment. Since we appear to be in consensus
about the mission, I think it's time to decide who will accompany me. I'm
certain I will require your services, Councellor. Though,if you're
concerned about the Vampire, you may bow out.

Beverly: May I accompany you, as well.

Riker: Planning to go after the Vampire, Dr. vonHelsing?

Picard: Mr. Data, would you come along as well. Your knowledge of the
colony would be of greeat use.

Data: I should note that Ensign Crusher assisted me is locating the
information.

Picard: Well, Mr. Crusher, I realize the last time you joined me on a
shuttle mission, it was somewhat difficult, but would you care to join me
again?

Wesley: I'd be honored, Sir. With Captain Rutger's permission, of course.

Rutgers: I have no ship left to command you with, Ensign. You are certainly
welcome to go.

Picard: Excellent. Mr. Worf, will you assemble an appropriate security
detail. Please note, I don't want to look like a small army when we land. I
imagine 2 or 3 would be sufficient. [pause] It appears we have things in
order. I'll contact Admiral Klaxton with our plans. Number One, Captain
Rutgers would you stay behind for a moment. Everyone else is dismissed to
attend to the details.

All but Riker and Rutgers file out. Picard waits until all have left.

Picard: I didn't really want to say this, but I think it is necessary. When
I leave the vessel, Mr. Riker, you are acting captain. I don't want any
conflicts over ranks. Captain Rutgers, your experience with the Euonymous
System will be very helpful, and I hope you're willing to share it with
Commander Riker. Now, I believe we all have work to do.

Riker nods, then exits, Rutgers begins to walk out then turns around.

Rutgers: You didn't have to do that. Klaxton has made it clear that until
the review at starbase 224, I am essentially on probation.

Picard: That was for his benefit. I didn't want him worrying that you'd be
superceeding his orders. Nor, do I want you trying to make up for your
mistakes -- especially with my ship.

Rutgers: Don't worry, Picard. I'll play nice with Commander Riker. All I
want to do is stop that probe before it hits the planet.

Picard: Well, if you "play nice," I'm sure that you both can accomplish
just that.

Picard looks to his console to begin a message to Admiral Klaxton. Rutgers
smiles, then turns and exits to the bridge.

END PART 3
Through a Crimson Glass, part 4

Open in space, two Enterprise Shuttles fly by. Cut into shuttle, Data and
Wesley sit in the cokpit. Picard enters from the rear compartment.

Picard: Mr. Data, are we within range of the Colony's communications
equipment?

Data: Yes, Sir. I will attempt to raise them.

Picard: Norendra Colony, this is Capt. Jean-Luc Picard of the Federation
Starship Enterprise. Are you receving?

After a long pause and random interference, a deep masculine voice is heard
over the static.

Whitmer: Enterprise. This is Colony President Alrick Whitmer. I apologise
that we cannot transmit visual, but we are fortunate to have any
communications at all.

Picard: Mr. President, I understand your limited communications. What was
the purpose of the message you sent earlier.

Whitmer: Too long has my planet sufferred in the past. Forsaking technology
may have been a good idea in the past, but now we find ourselves without
the necessities for trade and even for survival. [pause] We wish to resume
contact with the Earth.

Picard: I assure you the Federation will be happy to welcome you back. Our
craft will arrive in 6 hours. We can talk specifics once we arrive at your
planet.

Whitmer: We will welcome you when you arrive. I will send the location of
the main city. You will arrive at late evening local time. I will make
arrangements for you accomidations. How many crew shall I expect.

Picard: Thank you, President. We will have six. We will contact you again
once we are in orbit. Enterprise out. [communication ends] Well, Gentlemen,
we were about to sit down to lunch. Would you care to join us?

Data: I will remain here, as I do not require nourishment.

Picard: Come along anyway, Mr. Data. I wish to have a talk. Put the shuttle
on computer control. Inform Mr. Worf, then come and join us.

Cut into rear of shuttle. Beverly and Troi are seated as Picard enters from
the cockpit.

Picard: I have just spoken with the President of the Colony. [pause] It
seems we are not to be vampire hunters. Instead, the colony wishes to
rejoin the Federation.

Wesley and Data enter from the cockpit, and have a seat at the table.

Beverly: Speaking of vampires. I was doing some additional research into
the situation at the colony. It appear that vampires may not be as
fictional as we had thought. I found a medical report from the early 22nd
century concerning the isolation of a virus on Earth, called Carpathian
Neuorpathic Hatnavirus. The virus was transmissable only by blood contact
and affected the GI tract by making ingestion of solid food painful; it
also made the eyes extremely sensitive to light. Though, it's main effect
was on the brain, causing various neuroses.

Wesley: So, you have a psycotic who can't stomach solid food, and won't go
out into the light. That sounds strikingly familiar.

Beverly: Doesn't it? The virus was isolated from a paitent in a psyciatric
unit who had killed 5 people. Apparently he refused to go out into
sunlight, and claimed he required human blood to survive. At the time, a
random screening turned up antibodies to the virus in 5% of the population.
In most people it would result in only a transient, non-symptomatic
infection. Some people, however, were hypersensitive to the infection.

Picard: I could see where such an infection could be the source of the
vampire myth.

Wesley: I always thought that the atrocities commited by the real Count
Dracula of Transylvania were the source of the stories?

Data: Do you feel that a viral infection may be causing the vampire
phenomena on Norendra Colony?

Beverly: The virus was exterminated on Earth in the late 22nd virus. The
Norendra colonists left Earth prior to the eradication, and then broke
contact before the virus was well known. Here's the clincher, the virus was
especially prevalent in the peoples of Eastern Europe. It would not really
be surprising, as it seems viral diseases, like influenza, that were
eradicated on Earth long ago are very common on the Colony

Troi: If you're correct about this virus, that would mean a colonist could
be responsible for the killings. Is there anyway to test the colonists?

Beverly: Yes, the virus is easily screened for.

Picard: I doubt that would be good news for the colonists to find that one
of their own has been killing their young women for over 300 years. Let's
not bring this up with President Whitmer, unless it becomes necessary. If
you wish, Doctor, you may do your screening in confidence.

Troi: So what are your feelings about President Whitmer. Do you think he
simply wants to rejoin the Federation.

Wesley: I noted he said that the colony was having shortages due to lack of
trade and technology. Are you planning on providing them with the
technology they require?

Picard: I'm not sure. They have been living without technology for many
years, simply providing them with the technology could be extremely
disruptive to the culture. This could potentially be a Prime Directive
situation. But, we won't know until we get there.

Cut into space, the Enterprise speeds by at high warp. Cut to interior of
bridge. Riker is at command, Capt. Rutgers sits to his right. Various
Ensigns and Lieutennants crew the various positions. The communicator beeps
as Geordi reports from Engineering.

LaForge: [vo] LaForge to Bridge. We may have a problem.

Riker: What's going on, LaForge?

LaForge: [vo] We are getting the same oscillations in the warp core as was
found from the Wisconsin.

Riker: Hell! [to Ensign at Con] Bring us out of warp. Full stop.

Rutgers: What?! We can't stop now, we're only 19 hours from Euonymous!

Riker: There are over a thousand people on this ship. I'm not going to risk
their lives until I have a better idea what is going on. [pause] I'm going
down to Engineering. If you're so concerned about getting to Euonymous, you
may wish to come give us a hand.

Riker leaves for the turbolift. Rutgers glares at him for a moment, then
follows him into the lift. Cut back to the shuttlecraft. Data and Wesley
are in the cockpit. Picard enters from the rear compartment.

Data: Captain. We are entering the Norendra system. We are 5 minutes from
the colony.

Picard: Excellent, Mr. Data. Mr. Crusher, can you map the system? It's been
many years since a starship has come through this sector.

Wesley: Already begun, Sir. The system consists of 14 planets, the colony
is on the 5th.

Data: We are approaching the 5th planet. Shall I raise the colony?

Picard: Not yet. Mr. Data, I wanted to speak with you before we went down
to the colony. These people gave up their technology many years ago. I read
that when the Quioxte visited, some of the colonists were actually hostile
towards the technology brought to the planet. While I will admit that
things appear to have changed, I'm concerned for the reception you may
receive on the planet.

Data: Do you you wish me to remain on the shuttle?

Picard: No, I don't think that will be necessary. [pause] I just think it
may be in everyone's interest if you would not mention that you are an
android.

Data: You wish me to lie?

Picard: No, I simply would prefer that you not make that information known.

Data: If asked, what should I say?

Wesley: Just tell tham that you were born on Theta Omicron. Which is the
truth, anyway.

Data: Very well, Sir. We are entering orbit. I will raise the colony.

Picard: And so it begins....

Cut into space. The two shuttle craft cruise into the dark side of the
planet containing Nornedra colony. Fade to black.

END PART FOUR
Through a Crimson Glass, part 5

Open on Norendra Colony. Night. In the forground is a large medeival-style
castle. In front of the castle are seen two Federation shuttles. Cut to
area near shuttles. Worf and 2 security are already outside as Wesley and
Data exit from their shuttle, followed by Picard, Troi and Beverly.

Worf: It appears that there is no one here to meet us.

Picard: It's late at night, I'm sure they will arrive soon. [looking around
at castle] This is quite impressive. Almost a perfect replica of castles
I've seen on Earth.

The sound of a women clearing her throat hearalds the appearence of Mary
Selig from the castle.

Mary: Sirs, have you come from Earth?

Picard: In a manner of speaking. I am Captain Jean-Luc Picard, this is Lt.
Commander Data, Doctor Beverly Crusher, Councellor Deanna Troi, Ensign
Wesley Crusher, and my Chief of Security, Lt. Worf.

Mary gasps as she finally notices Worf.

Picard: [noticing] Do not fear, Mr. Worf is a Klingon... quite [beat]
harmless.

Mary: Forgive me, Sir. I am unfamiliar with other races. If you will follow
me, I will take you to your rooms.

Picard takes Worf aside for a moment.

Picard: [to Worf] Perhaps it would be best if you stayed on the shuttle.

Worf nods, he signals for one of the security men to accompany the crew,
then enters the shuttle. Cut to interior hall. The decor is very medeival
with suits of armour and other appropriate trappings. Mary is leading the
way with security following behind the remainder of the crew. Ahead, a man
is waiting.

Whitmer: Captain Picard. I am Colony President Whitmer. I am very pleased
to meet you, and your crew. [pause] I apologise that we have only 2 rooms
availible for you. The southern harvest has come in, and the buyers and
sellers are in the capital. Not to mention, once they heard a Earth
representitive was comming, all the regional leaders are here.

Picard: That's quite alright, President. We can deal with close quarters.

Whitmer: It's fortunate I was able to get two rooms. I wasn't aware that
part of your crew would be female. [pointing to a door] These are your
rooms. My assistant Mary will be availible if there is anything you need. I
must finish some paperwork, and I imagine the morning would be a more
appropriate time to speak. Until then, Good Night.

Whitmer and Mary walk away. All file into the room previously indicated by
Whitmer. Inside is a large room with a large window overlooking the
horizon. On the horizon can be seen sporatic lightning.

Beverly: Why do I get the feeling that equality of the sexes is a foreign
concept here.

Picard: Misogynous tendancies were a common phenomenon in Medeival Europe.
I'm certain it is a response to the prevailing culture of the Colony.
Recall that women on Earth faced similar situations through the 20th
century. I'm sure that such attitudes will soon change.

Picard's communicator beeps. Worf in the Security shuttle reports:

Worf: [vo] A large storm is forming to the East. It may be severe, but
should pose no danger. Records show that storms are very common on the
colony at this time of year. This will likely be the first of many.

Picard: Understood. Keep me apprised of any changes.

Picard and Wesley walk over to the window, the others spread about the
room.

Picard: Ah, wonderful. It's been too long since I have seen a real storm.
The holodecks do not do a thunderstorm justice.

Wesley: Yes, but they always look better from inside. [observing a bright
flash] Wow. That was a close one.

As the thunder from the flash rumbles, the room lights flicker, and then
the room is enveloped in darkness. [still in darkness, cut to Enterprise]
Removal of a wall panel shows the lighted interior of Engineering shot from
inside the wall. Geordi and Riker are examining some circutry.

Geordi: The oscillation disappeared once we dropped down to warp 8. But,
there's nothing in the readings to suggest why it was there, or even where
it came from. And everything in here appears to be normal.

Riker: If we're stuck at warp 8, it'll take us a few hours longer. That's
cutting it close, but it's better than nothing [to ceiling] Riker to
Bridge. Take us back to warp 8.0, on course for Euonymous 5. [to Geordi]
Can you get me some answers, Geordi. I'd sure like have some leeway once we
get there.

Geordi: I'll keep looking, Commander. But, I can't promise any answers.

Riker: Understood, I'll be on the bridge. Keep me apprised.

Geordi returns to work using a bright hand lamp to light the circutry.
Geordi's light points to the camera and fills the frame as we cut back to
Norendra Colony where the light of a beacon held by Data shines about the
darkened room. Wesley also holds a lighted beacon.

Picard: It appears that the lightning has hit the generator. Let's not
panic.

Troi: On a night like this, I could easily belive in vampires. Did anyone
remember to bring garlic?

Wesley: [producing a garlic clove] I wonder if replicated garlic will work.

A knock is heard on the door. Everyone jumps in surprise.

Picard: Perhaps you and your garlic could get the door, Ensign.

Wesley opens the door and finds Mary Sealig carrying a candelabra.

Mary: I'm afraid our generator has been struck by lightning. It's unlikely
that we will have power before morning.

Picard: Perhaps Mr. Crusher could give you a hand.

Mary: Thank you, I'm sure any help would be appreciated. But, it can wait
until morning. I will light candles, and start a fire. Without electricity,
it's likely to get rather cold tonight.

Mary begins lighting candles, then begins to arrange kindling for the fire.
Picard moves to help Mary with the fire.

Picard: Please, allow me, Miss Sealig.

Security 1: [grabbing a lit candle] Captain, I'll go next door and see to
the candles and the fire.

Security 1 exits. Mary stands to allow Picard to light the fire. The
remainder huddle around firplace to watch Picard work on the fire. In a
moment the fire is blazing.

Mary: I'm impressed. I would have thought that you would have no need to
start wood fires with the technologies you have.

Picard: I grew up with a very stubborn father. A fire was very common in
our home. And, of course, the Starfleet Academy teaches such skills in
survival training.

Mary: I hope I didn't offend your Mr. Worf earlier, with my surprise at his
appearance. For a moment I thought he was a werewolf.

Wesley: Do you have werewolves on your planet as well as a vampire?

Mary: Werewolves are nothing but silly myths. Unfortunately, the Vampire is
not. A friend of mine was killed just yest... [stopping herself] I'm sorry.
You don't wish to hear such things.

Beverly: No, actually we do. A women was killed yesterday? Was it the
Vampire's usual pattern? [quick pause] I don't mean to be morbid, I'm a
medical doctor. I would like to help if I could.

Mary: Thank you for the offer, Doctor. But, by the time a Vampire victim is
found, there's little even your technology can do for her.

Beverly: Is this the first recent attack? I had read that the attacks are
somewhat cyclic. Perhaps while we're here, we can help you with your
vampire problem.

Mary: I'm sure any help will be appreciated. But there is little you can do
until morning. I must be going. We will call for you in the morning. Good
Night.

Mary exits as Security 1 re-enters. She nods demurely as she passes out the
door.

Security 1: I have thoroughly checked both rooms. There are no devices. The
walls are solid, and have no hidden passages.

Picard: Thank you, Lieutennat. You may return to the shuttles [he leaves]
I'm almost disappointed. What good is a gothic castle without secret
passages? But, it is comforting to know we are safe from Vampires.

Beverly: I don't think that you were ever in danger from the vampire,
unless you plan on changing your sex sometime tonight.

Picard: I suppose that was insensitive of me. I imagine you ladies would
care for a bodyguard this evening. If so, you may choose your roommate.

Beverly and Troi look at each other, then in tandem:
Beverly/Troi: Wesley.

Picard: Very well, I think we should get some sleep. We are likely to have
a busy day tomorrow.

Beverly and Troi exit. Picard and Data look suspiciouly at Wesley.

Wesley: [smiling] I'm sure they just want me for my garlic.

Wesley quickly hurries out, as we fade to black.

It's starting to get moving now, hope you're still following along. Email
with any problems/questions...

Through a Crimson Glass, part 6

Open in the crew's room in the castle. Picard and Data are awake. Picard is
looking out the window observing the continuing storm. Wesley, Troi and
Beverly enter from the next roon.

Picard: Ah, Ladies. I see Mr. Crusher's garlic was adequate protection.

Troi: I'm surprised, I slept surprisingly well. There must be something
about the atmosphere that is condusive to sleep.

Data: Perhaps we slept too well. Miss Selig should have called for us an
hour ago.

Wesley: Perhaps they run on a later schedule around here?

Data: Unlikely, there have been workers in the courtyard for 2.5 hours.
Perhaps they are not prepared to negotiate.

A knock on the door is heard. Data answers it, to find a young man on the
other side.

Man: Captain Picard, I have come to escort you to the meetings.

Picard: I had expected Mary Sealig to call for us.

Man: Miss Sealig is unavailible.

Wesley: Could we contact Mary, she had asked me to help work on the
generator this morning.

Man: I'm afraid Miss Sealig is unavailible. Thank you for the offer, but
the Wiremaster is on his way to fix the generator. Your help would be
unnecessary. If you would follow me.

Picard: [Noticing a look from Troi] Very well, if you could wait outside,
we'll be with you in a moment.

The man exits as the crew huddles.

Picard: Councellor, it appeared you had something to say.

Troi: He's hiding something. I'm not sure what it is, but it seems
important. I think something happened last night.

Picard: I'll keep that in mind. Councellor, Mr. Data, you're with me. Mr.
Crusher, return to the shuttles. Check with Mr. Worf on watch, then...
conduct some surveillance of the castle. Doctor, Mary Seilig mentioned that
there was a recent "Vampire" victim. I'm sure you'd like to see what you
can find out. I'm still concerned that such a danger could be lurking
about.

All file out. Cut to the Enterprise Engineering. Many Engineers are running
about as the red alert klaxons are ringing. Geordi is frantically working
at a station.

Riker: [vo] Bridge to Engineering. What's going on down there?

Geordi: Stand by!

The core is bathed in gas from all sides and the bulk head doors seal to
prevent leakage.

Geordi: Engineering to bridge. The oscillations returned suddenly, and
caused a feed-back into the core. I've crashed the core and quick-cooled
it. I should be able to stabilize without ejecting it, but I don't think
we'll be going anywhere.

Riker: Can we go at impulse?

Geordi: I'm going to need a lot of power to get this thing under control.
I'd really like to get this figured out before we take off again.

Riker: How much time will you need?

Gerodi: A couple of hours at least. I won't know until I can get back in
the warp chamber.

Riker: Try and be swift, Commander. We're still on a tight schedule! Bridge
out.

Geordi turns to his staff and begins deploying them. Cut back to Norendra
Colony at the security shuttle. Worf, Wesley and 2 Security are present,
they are in discussion.

Worf: We were anable to do any scans over night. The storms interfered with
the equipment.

Wesley: That's too bad. It'd be real handy to have functional equipment in
case a vampire wanders by.

They all chuckle as Wesley's communicator beeps.

Beverly: [vo] Crusher to Ensign Crusher.

Wesley: Go ahead.

Beverly: [vo] Wesley, could you come down to the hospital. I'm in the
morge, I need you to check something.

Wesley: [jokingly] Have you got another Vampire victim?

Beverly: [vo] Yes, it's Mary Selig. She was killed last night at the
castle. Can you transport down here?

Wesley: [suddenly changing mood] Is there anyone else nearby?

Beverly: [vo] No, I'm alone.

Security 2: [working transporter] I'm locked on her signal.

Security 1: [throwing him a phaser] You might need this... better than
garlic.

Wesley transports away and reappears at a 20th century style morge. Beverly
is present, scanning a very pale looking Mary Sealig who is laid on an
autopsy table. A bloody mark is present on her neck.

Wesley: My god, what happened to her?

Beverly: She was murdered. And her blood was removed through a puncture of
the jugular vein.

Wesley: This seems like a bad 20th Century movie. What did you want me to
check?

Beverly: Check out her body with your tricorder. I'm picking up some
strange fields, but I couldn't identify them with the medical tricorder. I
was hoping your tricorder might pick something up.

Wesley: [scanning] I'm picking up some trace radiation...perhaps a field
residue. Yes, I see what you mean. [shaking head] I can't define what it
is.

Beverly pulls back the sheet on another women who also has puncture wounds
on her neck.

Beverly: This is the earlier victim, Elizabeth Djunic. She has the same
field residue around her.

Wesley: I'm stumped, maybe we could take them back to the shuttle, the
computer there could probably figure it out.

Beverly: I don't think they would let us do that. Especially considering
that I'm not even supposed to be here.

Wesley: What?

Beverly: I'm currently touring the maternity ward... at least as far as the
hospital staff knows. I'd better get back up there, and you better get back
to the castle.

Wesley: Yeah, this place gives me the creeps. Say, have you checked for
that "Vampire Virus" you mentioned before?

Beverly: It's Carapthian Neuorpathic Hatnavirus not "Vampire Virus." But,
yes, I have looked for it. Thus far, I haven't found it in any of the
people I've screened. Though, I have found influenza, adenovirus, assorted
pox viruses and innumerable rhinoviruses. Still, CNHV was an uncommon virus
on Earth. Even if it is here, it's unlikely I'd have found it. [pause] We
better get out of here.

Wesley beams away. Beverly pulls the sheet back over the faces of both
women, and moves away.

END PART 6
A note for those people doing the math with the times IUve given for
founding Norendra Colony (350 years before TNG, etc.): I was more concerned
with making the years internally consistent, than with matching them up
with the usual timeline.
If youUre concerned about it, the timing would work just as well by
loping 150 years off of all the dates I give, but IUm not inclined to
really worry about that. I hope this doesnUt take off too much from your
enjoyment (Thanks to Tim Dayger for pointing this out)

_______________________________
Through a Crimson Glass , part 7

Open in a conference room in the castle. Picard, Troi, and Data are
present, as well as Whitmer and assorted Colony dignitaries. Whitmer is
making a presentation.

Whitmer: ...and so, after nearly 400 years of repression and luddism. The
old rulers were forced from power. Though their influence remains strong in
the outlying districts, their time is past. As such, we wish to regain our
contact with Earth and once again join the 24th century.

Troi: Your people have been isolated for many years, is everyone of them
ready to make this step?

Data: You mentioned that the former leader's influence remains strong.
Might that suggest that not everyone is ready?

Whitmer: They had ruled with an iron hand. All dissent was squashed,
rebellion was unheard of. Many people have gotten so used to being
mistreated that they know of no other way. After the outcome of the first
rebellion almost 340 years ago, no one was willing to stand against them.

Data: We are not aware of the outcome of the first rebellion.

Whitmer: Well, at that time we still posessed the vessels that brought us
to this world. We had been here for a few years, and dissent was brewing
among many people. A group of colonists attempted to seize control, but
were unsuccessful. The leader at that time, Count Hessel, banished them to
another planet in the system.

Data: That is impossible, there are no other inhabitable planets in this
system.

Whitmer: At the time there was. 330 years ago, the planet disappeared.

Picard: Disappeared? How is that possible?

Whitmer: Astronomy was not conducive to getting the crops in. All that is
recorded is that the planet was missing from the sky. That year was marked
by many quakes and floods. Many simply took it as a sign from God that to
question the ruler's power would bring disasters.

Picard: [sitting up in his chair] I have heard your presentation, and will
pass it on to my superiors. I think we should have no trouble in renewing
contact with this colony. [pause] However, you must understand that this
will not be a quick process. A lot has happened in the years since your
forebearers left Earth, and it is important that you be allowed to aclimate
to the changes. Simply providing you with the technology you wish can be
very destructive to your culture. When we can be certain that we will not
cause more harm than good, we can speak further.

Whitmer: I thank you for your consideration, Captain. I was sure that you
would help us.

Picard: I would like to speak privately with my crew. Let's adjourn for
some time to allow us all to concentrate.

Cut to the main shuttle. Wesley and Beverly are working on the computer
analysing the data they collected at the morge. Picard, Troi, Data and Worf
enter.

Picard: I'm told you have some information for me, Doctor.

Beverly: Yes. The "Vampire" has claimed another victim. Mary Selig was
killed last night.

Picard: Damn. That means our killer was in the castle last night. Did our
scans pick up anything?

Wesley: The storms prevented any scans. Lt. Worf is working to get the
scanners going thought the interference.

Picard: That's unfortunate. Have you learned anything about our Vampire?

Beverly: Nothing really, though we've found a strage field around Mary
Selig's body, as well as some trace radioactive elements. We think it may
be some kind of stasis field residue, but it's not something we've seen
before.

Picard: Keep working. [pause] Mr. Data, what is your speculation concerning
the story of the first rebellion? Is it possible that the planet
disappeared?

Data: [sitting at a computer station] It may be possible. Our charting of
the star system noted some orbital abnormalities among the planets. And
note, there is sufficient space for a planet to have existed here.
[indicating area on screen] Also, the reports of atmospheric disturbances
could be coincidental with a close pass by a large mass which disrupted the
orbits of the planets, perhaps destroying the second planet.

Wesley: [noticing the screen] Wait a minute. Computer, extend the system
map displayed to show an area above the orbital plane.

The screen pans up to show a object above the plane.

Wesley: I noticed this object on the way here. Comptuer, what is the orbit
of this object.

The screen draws a line which intersects the orbital plane at around 90!.

Data: It appears the second planet was thrown out of the orbital plane. It
is unlkely that the colonists would have been able to observe such an orbit
from the planet.

Picard: Are there any life signs on that planet?

Data: It's unlikely, in such an orbit, the planet would be bathed in
constant cosmic radiation. It would be extremely difficult for anything to
survive. Though, that same radiation prevented us from making any scans of
the planet.

Troi: So it's possible that there may be people on that planet.

Picard: Well, we won't know from here. Once the storm breaks, Mr. Crusher,
Mr. Data, take the shuttle out to that planet and have a look. Although,
first, we have some other difficulties on this planet. I am concerned about
what these people are looking for.

Data: I note that they continue to refer to us as representitives of Earth.

Troi: Yes, and their reaction to Worf leads me to believe they are not
prepared for the myriad life forms present in the galaxy.

Wesley: It was fairly common for people of that time to believe that
humanity was alone in the universe. As well, there were some that believed
that any other life forms would be inferior.

Picard: I am concerned that their ignorance could quickly turn to
xenophobia; then they would likely return to the isolation of their past.

Troi: Still, in the end, it's not our call. All we can do is help them to
adjust. With any luck, they can successfully reenter the 24th century .

Picard: True. Well, we have some matters to discuss with the colonists. Mr.
Data and Crusher, get us a look at that planet. Report back with your
findings.

Picard and company leave and Data and Wesley prep the shuttle for take-off.
Cut to Enterprise Engineering. Geordi and assorted staff are present, Riker
is just entering with Rutgers following.

Riker: You had something to show us?

Geordi: Yes, I think I have this oscillation thing worked out.

Rutgers: That sounds like good news...

Geordi: Not exactly. I thought that since I couldn't find any reason for
the problem in the engines, the problem might be outside...

A screen comes up showing many ripples in a grid pattern displaying the
local "subspace distribution." A line displaying the path of the Enterprise
runs through several of the waves.

Riker: So the oscillations are occuring in the engines similar to the
effect of a boat going though rough seas.

Gerodi: Yes. The subspace frequency of the waves matches that of the warp
engines. This sets up a rhythmic feedback in the warp chamber. Previously,
the waves were at a low intensity, so we only got significant feedback over
warp 9. But now, the waves are strong enough that we get the effect at
lower warps. The bad news is that the waves are increasing in intensity as
we approach the Euonymous system.

Riker: So, the closer we get, the slower we need to go.

Geordi: Right. I'd estimate that we'd have to be down at warp 2 to even get
near Euonymous.

Rutgers: We approached and departed the system at warp 5 without any
oscillations.

Geordi: Yes, but you weren't running on overheated and gerryrigged engines.
In our condition, we're much more vulnerable.

Riker: Any idea what's causing this disturbance?

Geordi: Not really. There could be an unstable worm hole nearby. We're also
not far from the Sansevaria Cluster, maybe something in there is creating
this. Regardless, I don't think we're going to make our appointment with
your probe.

Close on Rutger's worried face as we fade to black.

END PART 7
Almost done posting. Parts 9 & 10 should be out this afternoon...

Through a Crimson Glass, part 8

Open in space as shuttle craft flies by. Inside is Wesley and Data.

Wesley: Comming up on the planet now. I'm reading many structures on the
surface. Many life signs. It appears that these people survived on this
planet.

Data: Interesting, try to hail them.

Wesley: Trying. [pause] No response, they may not be able to receive us.

Data: If that is the case, perhaps it is best that we not interact with
them. They may be even further regressed than the other colonists.

Wesley: I don't think so. I'm reading 2 vessels leaving the planet on an
intercept course.

Data: [pressing panel] There is extensive radio frequency activity. I will
attempt to patch us in.

A staticy chanel opens with a male voice.

Pilot: [vo] Unidentified vessel, come to a stop. You do not have permission
to enter this space.

Wesley: Their vessels are driven by very primitive impulse drives. They
don't have warp capability. I don't read any weapons...

The ship is rocked by laser fire.

Wesley: ...although I could be wrong. We were hit by laser fire. Low power.
I'm adjusting the shields.

Pilot: [vo] Unidentified vessel, come to a stop. This is restricted space.

Data: [to Wesley] I think it's time we talked. [to other vessel] This is
the Shuttle Iberia from the United Federation of Planets. We have no
hostile intent. May we speak to a governmental representitive.

Pilot: [vo] Come to a stop Shuttle Iberia. We will contact our superiors.

Data: He has switched to a different chanel. Bring us to a stop. I think we
should contact the Captain. [hitting communicator] Data to Captain Picard.

Picard: [vo] Stand by. [pause] Go ahead Commander.

Data: There are colonists on the second planet. They appear to be far ahead
of the other colonists in technology, perhaps the equivalent of 22nd
century-level. We have been engaged by 2 of their vessels. We are awaiting
contact from the government.

Picard: [vo] Very interesting.Go ahead and meet with the leaders. I don't
think I can get away from here right now. Discover as much as you can, but
proceed very carefully, Commander.

Data: Understood.

Pilot: [vo] Shuttle Iberia. Fall into formation and follow us.

Webster: [vo] Representitives of Earth, I am Administrator Webster of
Norendra Colony II. I apologise for firing on your vessel. We did not
expect you to visit our planet.

Data: Do you not wish us to visit your planet?

Webster: [vo] Do not misunderstand, you are most welcome. We just felt that
your intent was to aid the main colony, and as we really do not require any
aid...

Data: If you wish to regain contact with the Federation as well, I am sure
you too will be welcomed.

Webster: [shaken, surprised] They wish to resume contact? [pause] Perhaps
we can speak further once you land.

The transmission ends.

Wesley: He seemed a bit shaken when you mentioned resuming contact.

Data: Yes, perhaps it was not wise to mention that. We should be more
careful from now on.

The shuttle follows the 2 craft to a city. Upon landing, Wesley and Data
exit. There to meet them is Webster and assorted politicians.

Data: I am Commander Data of the United Federation of Planets. This is
Ensign Crusher.

Webster: Welcome, Commander. Please come with me, we will speak in private.

Data and Wesley follow Webster inside. While they go, Wesley is
nonchalantly monitoring his tricorder. They enter an office. Data and
Webster sit down at a desk. Wesley stands behind Data's chair using it to
block view of his tricorder.

Webster: I am very happy to once again speak with a representitive of
Earth. We have been very isolated since we were sent here.

Data: I am somewhat surprised, you apparently have the technology to travel
off the planet. Surely, if you wished to contact the Federation it would
have been a simple matter.

Webster: Our vessels are very primative. We could not leave our system in
them. And, though we were left with the technology to build those vessels,
the leaders of the First Colony kept the communication equipment. We are
not able to transmit to any neighboring systems, nevermind all the way to
Earth. Regardless, now, it appears you have come to us.

Data: In a manner of speaking. I am surprised that your people have
survived on this planet, especially the inital event that sent this planet
into this eccentric orbit.

Webster: My people were surviors. For decades we survived undergroud.
Eventually the atmosphere stabilized and we were able to return above
ground. Many colonists were lost, but with sacrifice and determination we
survived.

Data: I note this planet is bombarded with a large amount of cosmic
radiation. Normally, this level of radiation can be lethal.

Webster: It is one of the sacrifices we contiue to make. [pause] You
mentioned that the First Colony has expressed interest in re-making contact
with Earth. What is your response to their request?

Data: It is still being discussed. I see no reason for refusing.

A quick knock on the door is heard, followed by the entrance of a young
women we see only from the back.

Women: Surpise, my Dear! [noticing Wesley and Data] Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't
mean to inturupt.

Webster: Not at all. Gentlemen, I'd like you to meet my wife.

Wesley is shocked as he notices the women. With difficulty, he doesn't
react. Though he once again checks his tricorder secretly.

Data: If I may, how long have you been married?

Webster: We were just married yesterday...

Data: Congratulations to you both.

Wesley: Yes, congratulations. Commander, we are expected back on the colony
very soon. We should be going.

Data looks over his shoulder to Wesley who returns a meaningful glance.

Data: Uh... You are correct, Ensign. Administrator, I thank you for your
time. We shall be in the vicinity for some time. Should you wish to contact
us, we will monitor the radio frequencies you contacted us with originally.

Wesley: I am certain our Captain would wish to visit at some point. He
would likely want to hear more about your planet.

Webster: Yes, I'm sure. I, too, would like to speak with him.

Wesley: Perhaps later today...

Webster: I will make arrangements... Until then.

Data continues with a look of surprise, but eventually follows Wesley's
lead. They exit leaving Webster and his wife alone. Cut to the interior of
the shuttle. Data and Wesley are preparing the shuttle for departure.

Data: I trust you had a reason for your behavior.

Wesley: Yes. Webster's wife. We met this morning in the morge.

Data: [surprised] Do you mean she has travelled from the first colony?

Wesley: [hitting communicator] Ensign Crusher to Doctor Crusher. [turning
to Data] Not exactly.

A beep is hear as Beverly answers.

Beverly: [vo] Go ahead.

Wesley: Remember that first vampire victim, Elizabeth Djunic? Are you sure
she was dead?

Beverly: [vo] It is very difficult to live without your blood. Especially
after an autopsy. Yes, I'm sure she was dead. Why?

Wesley: Because Data and I just spoke to her.

Through a Crimson Glass, part 9

Open on the Frist Colony. Data and Wesley have returned, and the rest of
the crew are in the shuttle.

Picard: Report, Ensign.

Wesley: We were meeting with the Administrator, when his new wife entered.
She looked exactly like Elizabeth Djunic. I swear it was the same woman.

Troi: Are you sure she didn't just look like her. It's possible the two
women are related, and simple look alike.

Wesley: I'm certain it was the same women. If we take Data to the morge,
I'm sure he will recognise her.

Data: That is true. I could easily make that identification. But, I should
mention. You are to meet with the Administrator within the hour.

Picard: Am I? Have you made any other appointments for me Ensign?

Wesley: Sorry, Sir. Something is going on up there. We needed another
chance to look around. You should take Mom along. The radiation readings I
was getting up there seemed awful high for an inhabited planet.

Picard: Very well, if we are to go, we should get off before the storm
returns. Mr. Crusher, take Mr. Data to see this women in the morge.
[hitting communicator] Mr. Worf, report to the Iberia.

Worf enters the shuttle as Data and Wesley exit. Cut to the Enterprise
Engineering. Geordi and Rutgers are present, Riker enters.

Riker: Any luck gaining control of the probe?

Rutgers: Not yet. We're in range to communicate with it, but it's not
responding.

Riker: That's too bad. How about you, Geordi. Any good news?

Geordi: Well, we're probably not going to explode anymore. I suppose that's
good news. [pause] Still, our top speed keeps going down the closer we get.

Riker: So we don't have any options?

Geordi: Well, there is one idea I have. [pause] The feedback is occuring
when the waves match the frequency of the engines. Thus, the problem is
with the engines. If not for the engines, we could warp right through these
waves.

Rutgers: It's tough to warp through anything without warp engines.

Riker: [With Eureka! look] Not if we kick up the engines between the waves,
then shut them down and coast on the residual warp field. That could work.

Geordi: Yeah, but I don't want to be around here if we mis-time the
shut-down.

Riker: Then, I guess you better get the timing right. Work on it Commander.

Cut back to the first colony in the morge. Wesley and Data are
materializing. As they do, a crack of lightning is heard as the light
flicker and go out. They produce beacons and scan the room.

Wesley: Looks like we got here just in time.

Data: Yes, the storm has clearly returned. We were fortunate to not be
transporting during thast last stroke of lightning. [pause] Which is the
women we are looking for.

Wesley: [indicating a table] This one here. [pulling back the sheet]

Data: [pause] You are correct, Wesley. This women looks exactly like the
women we met on the Second Colony.

Wesley: I knew it! [hitting communicator] Crusher to Picard!

No response is heard to the hail.

Data: Data to Picard. [no response] Data to Security. [no response] The
storm must be interfering with communications. We should get back to the
shuttle as soon as possible.

Cut to the exterior of the hospital. The street is dark and a light rain is
falling, no one is around. Lightning and thunder is heard intermitently.
Data and Wesley come out of the hospital.

Wesley: Wow. The whole city is out.

Data: Yes, the main power station must have been hit. We should hurry, we
may not be safe on the streets with this storm. The castle is this way.

Wesley: Did you hear something?

Data: I heard thunder. Is that what you mean?

Wesley: No, I thought I heard a scream.

A women's scream is heard in the distance. Wesley runs towards the sound.

Data: I imagine that was what you ment.

Data follows after Wesley. Cut to a dark alley where a cloaked man is seen
from behind standing over a young women. A light glow is seen around the
women. She is not moving. Wesley runs up behind him.

Wesley: [still running] Hey! Get away from her!

The man turns and fires a beam at Wesley. Data arrives behind Wesley in
time to pull him out of the way. They crouch behind a box.

Wesley: Why would a vampire carry a phaser?

Data: Actually, it's a laser. Though I don't know why he would need it.
[pulling phaser] I'll cover you, let us get closer.

Data fires over the box as Wesley scrambles toward the women. Data misses,
though he draws the man's fire. Running ahead, Wesley is able to stun him
with his phaser. Wesley continues over to the women as Data checks on the
man.

Wesley: [checking pulse] She's still alive, barely. [pulling tricorder]
He's drawn out a lot of her blood.

Data: He does not resemble the literary interpretation of a vampire.
[holding one device] They usually didn't require a stasis field generator.
[picking up second device] In fact his method of drawing blood is rather
unique.

Data is holding a needle like device attached to holding canister. Wesley
picks up the women and begins carrying her.

Wesley: Hopefully that contains the blood he removed. Bring it along, she
needs to get to the hospital.

Data carries along the man and follows Wesley out of frame. Cut to the
second colony, Webster's office. Picard, Beverly and Troi are present along
with Webster. The meeting is ending.

Picard: It has been a pleasure meeting with you, Administrator. I am
pleased to see that your people have persevered under the conditions forced
upon you. As well, I understand congratulations are in order. I'm told you
were recently married. [pause] I wonder if I could congratulate your wife
as well.

Webster: I'm sorry, Captain. [pause] My wife has just left to visit family
in another city. I will certainly pass on your best wishes.

Picard: That's too bad. Well, we must return. We will be in the area for a
few days. Feel free to contact us.

All rise, Webster escorts them out of his office. Outside on the street,
the crew huddles as they walk along. People mill around as they walk,
including several young boys at play.

Picard: I must agree with Mr. Crusher, something is not right here. What
are your feelings on Webster, Councellor.

Troi: Webster was very uncomfortable, especially when you mentioned his
wife. He lied about his wife's visit. [pause] Though it appears so
tranquil, I've just got a bad feeling about this whole planet.

Crusher: I just realized what's wrong. We've been here for a few hours, and
though we've seen many women around, I haven't seen any young girls.

As they continue to walk, a women with a small child in a safety seat rides
toward them on a bicycle. She skids and falls off. Beverly notices and goes
over to help.

Beverly: [pulling out tricorder] Are you hurt? Let me help you.

Beverly quickly scans her with her tricorder. She has a look of concern as
she continues her scan. She scans the young child as well with a similar
look.

Women: Really, I'm fine. I just took a little spill. Thank you for your
help.

Beverly: [stopping her scan] Yes, you're fine. And so is your little girl.
Be more careful while you're turning.

The women stands and rides off on her bike. Beverly stands and watches her
ride off.

Troi: Is something wrong?

Beverly: Well, I just found out why there's no little girls running around.
That little girl is dying.

Picard: Dying?

Beverly: Yes, and unless I miss my guess, so are all the little girls on
this planet. The radiation exposure on this planet seems to be specifically
destroying the immune system of young girls. That, and the large number of
common viruses endemic here will combine to kill her before she's in her
teens.

Picard: But there are many older women on this planet. That girl's mother,
for one. How did she survive her teens?

Beverly: She didn't. That women is a clone.

END PART 9
Here is the conclusion. I'll let things cool down before I worry about
reposting. If you need to see it again, write, and I'll repost it.
_________________________________________
Through a Crimson Glass, part 10 [end]

Open in the hospital on the First Colony. Wesley, carrying the women,
enters hurriedly. Data follows him with the man (vampire) over his
shoulder.

Wesley: I need a doctor! This women needs help! [placing her on a table]
She needs a doctor fast!

Nurse: [hurrying over] Lord have mercy! She's ben got'n by the Vampire.
There's nothing we can do for her, son.

Wesley: Yes, there is. [grabbing the device from Data] Her blood is in
here. We've got to get it back into her before it's too late. Start an i.v.
line.

A doctor grabbs the container of blood and begins going about returning it
to the women. The nurse notices the man over Data's shoulder.

Nurse: Who's dat den?

Data: I belive this is the Vampire.

The nurse screams then faints as Data looks on inquisitively. Data sets him
down and searches him. Data finds a long needle like device.

Wesley: Maybe you should put him down. [looking at the blood drawing
device] This is a unique device. It looks like this pair of needles is used
to remove the blood into that container. What have you got there?

Data pushes a button on the device and a long thin needle pops out.

Data: I do not recognise it. Though it does look somewhat familiar.

Wesley: It's like a hollow probe. Looks like there's a micro-injector... or
a cell collector?

Data: [with a look of recognition] Yes, a cell collector. Similar to that
used for collecting somatic cells for cloning.

Wesley: Cloning?

Cut to the street on the Second Colony. Beverly is speaking.

Beverly: Cloning. It makes sense. Females on this planet can't grow to
child-bearing age, thus, if you clone them when they're already mature...

Troi: You'll be able to have children and keep your people alive. But, who
are they cloning?

Cut back to the hospital, showing the women who is being attended to by the
doctor.

Wesley: That's how we saw Elizabeth Djunic on the Second Colony. She was
cloned!

Data: True. It's likely that is the case. However, I do not understand why
he would take their blood?

Cut back to the Second Colony. Picard, Troi, Beverly and Worf have returned
to Webster's office and have confronted him with the findings. Webster is
noticibly upset but restrained due to Worf's presence.

Beverly: After you have cloned the body, you put the blood of the original
back in the clone. This way you get the humoral immunity of the original to
protect the clone from the endemic diseases of this planet.

Picard: I imagine this scheme has been going on for years. Using the legend
of the Vampire to cover for your crimes.

Webster: Crimes! Surely you are overstating...

Picard: [interupting, and upset] You have killed hundreds of women, and
probably outright kidnapped even more.

Webster: You don't understand! Without these women, our people would have
died out years ago!

Picard: And you had no other option than to resort to murder!

Webster: Technically, these women are still alive. They're lives are better
than anything they faced on the First Colony. There, they are servents and
slaves. Here, they have lives of luxury. All is provided for them. None
have ever complained of their fate.

Troi: Have they been given a chance to decide? I don't imagine they would
enjoy knowing they had been killed and reborn on a planet thousands of
kilometers from where their lives had been. Surely that is quite an
adjustment.

Webster: Of course that is quite unsettleing. But, we help them adjust by
giving them a new life and memories to suit that new existance.

Picard: Of course, you give them a happy little fantasy of an ideal youth,
growing up on this planet. Brainwashed into believeing this is where they
belong! I can't imagine how you could keep this up for so long.

Webster: It has not been easy...

Picard: I imagine it has not! [pause] This must stop! Now!

Webster: If I may remind you Captain. You have no authority on this planet.

Picard: No, but I do have authority on the First Colony. They have asked
for Federation assistance, and the first assistance I will provide is to
secure the safety of their people. [pause] You will end your practice of
kidnapping if I have to destroy your cloning equipment myself.

Picard and crew stand to leave. As they leave, Webster says softly:

Webster: You have signed the death warrant of my people.

Picard: That warrant was signed long ago. I am simply handing it to you.

As the crew walks backs to the shuttle, they stop in the street to talk.

Beverly: He's right, you know. Without the cloning of the First Colony's
women, this colony will die out in a generation.

Picard: Yes, Doctor, I know.

Troi: What about the First Colony. Do you think they will be accepted back
into the Federation.?

Picard: No. They are not ready for the reality of the 24th century.

He pauses and looks around at the technology of the Second Colony.

Picard: Though, perhaps they are prepared for the technology of the 22nd.

Pull back as they continue walking. Cut to space. The Enterprise is
approaching Euonymous 5. Riker's log voices over the approach.

Riker: [vo] Ship's log: First officer reporting. After an eventful journey,
we have finally arrived at Euonymous 5. The reason for our jouney, the
malfunctioning marker probe of the Wisconsin has been recaptured prior to
entering the atmosphere. The reason for it's malfunction is yet to be
determined. My hope is that, though the probe had been in full view from
the planet for nearly 8 hours, the inhabitants did not observe it. Such a
sight could affect the burgoning culture of this planet in ways we can only
imagine....

Pan down to the planet's surface. There, in a small room a small biped is
staring through a crude telescope. As he looks through the scope, he is
writing in a large book in an unrecognisable script. After a moment he
stops, looks up from his scope, then again writes in his book. Fade out as
we pull back from the man who continues to look through his scope.
