Cyber Journal issue 2

The Cyber Journal
issue #2
December 3, 1992

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Outlook:

Well, it has been about a week now, and time for the second issue. A lot
has happened, and most of it for the worst. The good news first though. I
was suprised to find that I have such a high readership [a whole 5
members]!! (This may infact be an over estimate). No, I am not being
sarcastic, I am really suprised anybody read my work. I have recieved a
couple of comments [all of which were supportive]. Now for other news. I am
no longer affiliating myself with any group (i.e. The Dark Regime). This is
not because I think the members are lamers or anything like that, but I do
much better as an independent (always have, and probobly always will). At
any rate, this will not affect the readers because this is my newsletter, I
conceived the idea, I put out the first issue (all the articles were mine),
and I will continue to support it as long as you [the reader] will. I did
seriously think about trashing the project, but figured, what the hell, at
least someone is learning something! So at least in the future you can look
for several more issues. I do not have yet a 'home-board' so if you want to
upload to me an article or anything else, you will just have to find me
(after all you guys are the elite ones, I know you can find me). I have not
recieved any articles yet, so I will continue to just do my own (although I
do appreceate the complements, thank you). As far as this issue and the
newsletter in general are concerned, the format is (and probobly will
remain) in the informal structure. I understand that a lot of this may seem
like more theory than anything else (not becuase you guys are not good
enough, but because you do not have the resources). I have included a few
articles in this issue, and I know one of them (at least) may be of some
practical use. (I hope). I will get more technical as time goes on, and many
future articles will include a tiny bit of knowledge in electronics. With
all that said, lets cut the crap and get on with the good stuff!

Cheesebox

A cheesebox is a neat little modification that enables the phracker to do
several things. It, in essence, will turn your home phone, into a payphone.
This will let you call out (using Red Box tones) at a very economical
advantage. Do not quote me on this, but I think it also limits the chances
[if not totally eliminates the chances] for being tapped or traced. You will
need the following:

Call fowarding (optinal through the phone company)
A set of Red Box tones (article in this newsletter)
The number to your local intercept operator (requires some calling around)

Note on the intercept operator: The intercept operator is the lower end of
the operators [yes, there are more than one type of operator]. He or she is
the one who comes on when there are no more recordings to tell you the number
has been changed or disconnected. He or she has a couple of other jobs, I
believe they may handle collect calls as well. Anyway, they generally can
not tell where you are calling from, so it is safe to scan around for the
number. If you are insecure, goto a payphone and scan. Just be cool, and
talk to the operator prying out info (such as the operator's #). They may
not understand what you are talking about (for real), so just be normal and
ask for the operator you are looking for (i.e. the one who gets on-line when
there are not enough recordings to tell you the number was changed or
disconnected. If all else fails, say you are a repairman (no big deal).

Okay, now for set-up. Once you have the intercept operators number, foward
all calls to him or her. Your phone is now off-hook (it is waiting for a
coin to be dropped in). Thats it! Now use your Red Box tones and call out.
Have fun! (Note: this mod is fairly safe, so don't worry too much)

Red Box

Okay, time for the Red Box. This box not only complements the Cheese Box,
but will work by itself (on a regular payphone). It is a rather simple
concept:

the tone for the coin dropping (any coin) consists of -> 2200 Hz + 1700 Hz

coin type length for on/off (in ms) # of beeps
--------- ------------------------- ----------
Nickel 66 ms 1 (on/off) 1x
Dime 66 ms 2 (on/off) 2x
Quater 33 ms 5 (on/off) 5x

Thats all it is. There are programs to emulate these tones, if you don't
have one I suggest you pick it up, or if you are a programmer it is not that
hard to do it yourself. As I said, if you get creative you can use them in
other ways (such as taping them, and using them on a regular payphone, or if
you are good with electronics, make a portable tone generator--in a future
issue I will go over portable tone generators and how to make one).
Well have fun!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Black Box

The Black Box may be familiar to some of you, it is one of the older
boxes. It is rather simplistic, and lets you get calls to your home free
of charge to the caller. (Please note the article on phone systems, this
does not work under the newer phone systems). It works in a fairly simple
manner, when your phone is doing nothing the voltage is maintained at about
20v (roughly). When someone calls you the voltage kicks up to 48v. When you
answer the phone it drops to 10v, and the call is recorded from that drop
onward. The black box maintains the voltage at 36v, making the phone company
think the phone is still ringing, but you have picked up, and the caller
will not be charged! There is a drawback (obviously). If you let the call go
for over about half of an hour, the phone company will become suspicious and
they will disconnect the line for 5-10 seconds, dropping the caller. (After
all who would listen to a ringing phone for half an hour with nobody
answering!) There are several models which I will document here, just choose
the one that best suits you, or is easiest to make.

Model I

parts:
(1) 1.8k 1/2 watt resistor
(1) 1.5v LED
(1) SPST switch

step 1)Take your phone apart.
step 2)You are looking for 3 wires: Red, Yellow, and Green
(We are going to need the red one)
step 3)do this:

(optional green line for external version)
----------------------------
Line !---/ / /--#--! Phone
-------! !------
!----- \ -----!

/ / /=resistor
#=LED
\=SPST switch
usage:
Use the SPST for the on/off mechanism. When the box is off, the phone is
perfectly normal. When the box is on, and the phone rings, the LED will
flash. When you pick it up (answer it) the LED will remain on, and the
caller will not be charged. If the box is on, you cannot call out.

This model can easily be made external, just use female phone jacks, and
you have a portable black box. (Where Line and Phone are, use female plugs,
all you need to include is the green and red wire. The red is as follows in
the diagram, the green is just runs through without any manipulation).

Model II (another perspective)

parts:
(1) 1.8k 1/2 watt resistor
(1) 1.5v LED
(1) DPST switch

diagram: (rest is the same basically)

(optional green line for external version)
------------------------------
Line Phone
-------! !-------
!--\-----#--------!
! !
!-------/ / /-----!

\=DPST switch
#=LED
/ / /=resistor

The usage is the same as Model I, just find out (for both models) by
playing around with it, which position is on, and which is off. Once you
find out, label it. Also, you could be professional and use a breadboard (or
PC board for the circuiting). Thats it! Happy boxing, and remember your time
limit!

Phone Systems

I would like to point out that there are a few different kinds of phone
systems. Not all boxes and phone mods will work under certain phone systems.
I plan on going over these different systems in a later issue, but for now,
just experiment to find out if you are in a certain phone system that won't
allow a certain box. The phone company is always looking for ways to defeat
our inventions, just as we are looking for their loopholes. So if a certain
box or mod doesnt work, don't blame yourself or me, it could be the phone
system!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

In Closing

Well, there is another issue. I hope you enjoy! As I have said before,
please, I want your input. If you can, contribute something, it's worth it,
really. I am going to continue for a while here (I have decided) so you can
look for issue#3 sometime soon. As the issues go up in number, they will
most likely get more interesting. If you want a certain article, and I have
the information, I will do requests. I am working on an Amiga program:
DarkPhrack (as mentioned in issue#1). This program will be capable of
producing all the tones you see in these newsletter articles (and a lot
more). I don't have a release date, whenever the hell I get it finished.
(Probobly sometime this spring). Well I guess thats about it for this issue
so I will see you later, and until then, have fun Phracking!
