The twenty three best
CDs/tapes/records
of all time

More stuff inside Inside
3: the twenty five best records of all time
4: Twenty five best records ever
1.Green Day-Dookie. Had you going there didn't I?
1. Nirvana- Nevermind. We all have to remember the four chords that started this record as well as avaluation. This gave me so much hope and inspiration and it let rock live a little longer.
2. Sonic Youth- Confusion is Sex. The most experimental things I've ever heard ever. Sonic Youth havlways defied the boundaries of music. They seem to come out of nowhere and they're gone before youko it
3. Mudhoney-SuperfuzzBigmuff+ early singles. Some of the most energetic, angry rock songs ever writtplus a horrifying cover of Sonic Youth's "Halloween" make this CD a great listen.
4. Sonic Youth-Daydream Nation. Something about this one seems to cross over all musical boundaries hout alienating the listener, rocks hard without being abrasive, and is so far over the edge, thati' takes weeks to comprehend.
5. "You'll Hate this record" compilation. Not an easy find, but this came out in the days of Def Leod and Metallica were getting huge fan bases and airplay. But who can hate Black Flag and GG Allin nte same disc?
6. Meat Puppets- Too high to die. Well, this CD is packed with great songs and better melodies plus idden version of Lake of Fire. Icing on the cake
7. Sick of it all- Scratch the Surface. 14 raunchy punk songs to mosh your ass off to.
8. Nirvana-Rough Tapes. Before Nirvana saved rock, they tried to kill it. Experimental and often noisongs that rule. The song Another Rule is also known as verse chorus verse, remember.
9. Black Flag, everything went black -_-_ it rules it rules it rules it rules!
10.Sonic Youth EVOL - after a while, you sit and think that rock is dead and it's too commercial. So youth are with you "100%" and this CD is not rock or anything like that. It's beyond music, it's eod reality.
11Archers of Loaf-Vee Vee it' great. Ian Mackaye would be proud
12. Matt Keating-scaryarea. If you like Beck and other folksy/rapper song writers, this is a good lin. Matt even has that nasal vocal that could make Beck jealous.
13. the Misfits- walk among us. Before Samhain and Danzig, Glenn was being pissed in the Misfits. Meic little ditties that are just as much punk as your RDA allows.
14. Beastie Boys- Licensed to Ill. well, their finest moment. Obvious New York rap. According to theymes, they always have a bottle of Brass Monkey, get wasted al the time, meet women who steal furntr, and watch Colombo. I believe it.
15. Rollins Band- weight. I got a little laugh when I hear a thirty five year try to scream, but I ct complain here. Rollins hasn't changed all this much since Black Flag, from what I hear here, excp or the guitar parts. Some of the best lyrics ever written
16.Bad Religion- How Could Hell Be any worse?-How could this CD be any better?
17.Tom Petty- Wildflowers. It' great. I don't care what you say. Anyway, how can you go wrong with, t's get to the point - let's roll another joint"?
18. Meat Puppets II enjoy.
19. Exploited- singles compilation. The leaders in the Brit punk movement, Exploited harbor a hate fmods, police and pretty much everyone and everything else as well. Remedial punk listening
20. REM murmur. This CD reminds me of the days when REM proved that a little indie band could kick U ass in any magazine poll or critics choice. Plus, they weren't obsessed with image and could star iot in a bar full of macho marines as well as Black Flag could any day of the week.
21. Glenn Branca- Turn the world upside down. Noisy, intense instrumentals that make you want to pisour pants.
22. Sonic Youth-Goo. Hard, somewhat fast, pop songs mixed with ear splitting, tooth chipping, beauti noise.
23. Beck- one leg in the grave. Songs about cheesecake, potatoes and being stuck in the green house ect that is known as LA
Inside the Moral Kiosk
So, you are wandering out of the local record store and
you can't help but think that fascism is in the air. Well, maybe it was all of those Parental advisostickers you saw on all your favorite CDs, or why the In Utero CD had a song called Waif Me on it.Yuhave just faced censorship in the eye and I would have suggested spitting. Why do we have to putupwih little warnings about the CD we want. We know what kind of music it is, we know what'll be o it Bu Janet Reno is certainly not convinced that we do.
Later that night, you flip on the TV and you see a little disclaimer saying that "NYPD Blue" contaiscenes of violence and nudity. Yeah. Uncle Sam put that there too. It's a game of sorts that peopl ly, called Moral Watchdog. These groups have been around as long as the KKK and to be totally honst ae as constructive as the Klan also. It really makes me sick. I don't want somebody to monitor y tougts and what goes in my head. Plus whenever something is honest, it's like a pack of ravenouswolvs ovr a piece of meat. The credibility is torn to shreds and made a spectacle of until someonefinaly quis and finds a new line of work, giving you a burrito at the 'El taco'. It could be a CD,movie, shirt,or TV show.
I remember when the Simpsons came out. It was probably late '89 and until then every show was the s. The family were all desperately in love with one another and everything was totally PC, the whol ards. MY family and I all found the Simpsons funny and for one reason. We were exact copies of te imsons. I was a a little punk, My sister got all A's on her report card and my brother was very oun. Bt still, people were offended by a shirt with the word "hell" on it. People who are trying t kee thi rosy facade of everyone loving another.
Anything non-conformist seems to get the boot also. When I went to buy Nevermind, (mainstream) musias Whitney Houston and Michael Bolton. People who sang about stuff which was totally beyond them.Nrana went back to loud guitars. Guns 'n'roses did that too, but Nirvana were totally different. Smehig the baby boomers couldn't handle. The feelings of the twentysomethings. I could not believe hatpeole would be offended by seeing a baby's penis on the cover of a CD. If you dig through an abum t hoe, you could find tons of nude pictures in it. And what's worse, I find nothing offensive bout evermnd itself. I just heard beautiful music, and a blast of fresh air.
There isn't much that we can do about things like that, except that we should accept and embrace eything different. Everyone from the KKK to the blacks, to the whites. We also need to notice anote hing, the Government needs to spend it's money in more useful ways. Kids shouldn't have to live n rapy towns and they shouldn't have to go to school in fear that someone is going to turn them ino goun beef. I also think that we shouldn't waste all our time figuring out the national debt eithr. I is problem that has to be solved, but there is homelessness, AIDS, crime, Rush Limbaugh, racsm, sxism, fascism, and all the other isms our Government has to help us solve. They live here too, maybe ot in he same neighborhoods, or the same state, but they often face the same problems and fer the sme thins. Besides, there's another Whitney CD coming out soon. Now that's a problem has tobe solve. Preach eh? Meat Puppets : Too High To Die
I enjoy a bang your face into the wall punk listen, but after a little while, I just wanna pop a snle and listen to something cool like the Meat Puppets. Well, If you feel that way too, go get Too ihTo Die. This is on a major label, but after ten years on indie labels, and a devoted following (whchincluded Kurt Cobain, always a plus) the Puppets have made their mark. It also sounds a lot lke he arlier indie releases, not a smidgen more corporate. So, I do not wish to call the Kirkwood rothrs ad Derrick sell outs, because they just changed labels. So, without further ado, my review. Manyof th songs here rock a lot harder than the older material. "We Don't Exist", "Violet Eyes," nd "Bakwater are examples. "We don't exist has an intro that almost reminds me of some crappy VanHalen sng. The all feature a lead guitar, but unlike Clapton or Page or any other "olde farts", Cut can tae a decet, melodic solo without killing the song. "Shine" though reminds me of the earliersongs lik "Climbin" with it's softer sound. So, there is some variety here. But there are some realy beautifl songs hee. Beauty can be described as moving, and often pleasing. Well, there are beauiful songs ere. "Shine and "Things"i n particular. "Things" does rock real hard, but it's such a jy to hear. "hine" lets yu go deep into Curt Kirkwood's soul, but without getting lost in the dark averns.
"Roof with a hole" has a blusey approach. There's an organ in the background, plus a lost f bluesy minor chord changes. You could say that blues is sellout music, but than again, few blues (wo)menmk it to the major labels and nobody gets on MTV. However, punk's whole purpose was to get away frm ha ( Ramones), but this is one song and I can live with it.
"Backwater"is probably the poppiest song here. Of course, with songs filled with long instrumental tions, droll voices, and obscure lyrics, that is almost an unattainable goal.
To be frank, some things on here are really weird. "Station" sings about an alternate universe wherhere are no thoughts, just Lincoln logs. I can relate. Of course, that's hard because I don't dropai. After about seven songs like that, you want to recommend the Puppets to a good shrink, but the aai, we all need one. "Comin down" would sound like something that your bible thumping grandmothe wold e singing, "Comin down from the mountain/I have seen the high and mighty..." it goes on likethat Aftr the last song, " Lake of Fire "comes on. There's a long, elaborate solo at the end, plusa lea all he through. Sped up considerably as well, it gives the Nirvana version a run for it's moey.
The Meat puppets have had a definite musical progression, from songs coming mostly from jokes, to soloing, to the more intellectual lyrics, you feel that the three SoCal boys have gone somewhere.
