Kill or be killed:
new bands who get mainstream attention, who will live
who will die Inside:
2: the winners and the losers
Predators and Prey: which bands will last
Right now, HFS has selected the fifteen songs it's going to play for the next three months. Most ofe songs are from newer bands and that plus other stations and MTV will push these bands into the misream. Not everyone will come out alive. Some bands will be one hit wonders, others enduring and emmbred. Here's who'll be what.
Better than Ezra- nope. Expect these guys to be right in between Loverboy and Quarterflash in the er bin.
Cathrine Wheel- yes. Too abrasive for third graders and VH1, so they'll last
Verruca Salt- nope. They got famous and signed after their seventh gig I believe. When fame comes ck, faliure is faster.
Weezer- no. Weezer isn't all a joke, but most people see them that way and maybe Weird Al will offthem a spot on tour.
Rancid- these punk purists will hold their own, undoubtley.
Sebadoh- oh yeah. There is no way these guys will fall out of view. They rule and that's that.
Liz Phair- I really can't say much here. She's been the next big thing forever but has never seemed get attention. And when she does, she'll be touted as the next Mellisa Etheriage
Fugazi- IanMackaye has been walking that tightrope between capitalism and punk rock for most of hisfe. But Fugazi will probably break up if every third grader and his brother get into them.
Rollins Band- they got some attention by playing the grammys, and it freaked me out to see whoeversted mention Black Flag. The next day some yuppie goes and buys Damaged and it scares the hell outo hem. But Rollins played "Liar" and Weight turned gold. They handled success pretty well by not mkig ideos and just playing smaller places.
Sonic Youth- SY is really outside the manistream, and will be there forever. These days, it takes osong, a flashy video, and some ariplay and you're a star. But Thurston said it best when he said,"ere not hit people."
Beck- well Beck has his day in the spotlight but he is far from a one hit wonder. He released Sterohic Soulmanure on an indie label no less and is on the Lollaplozza bill. It isn't a sellout fest ti ear. With SY and all those other bands, well...
All the dirt that's fit to show, and lots more
All day there are two things to watch on my TV,
talk shows and tabloid news crap. I guess you're thinking, "Well, Duh, HB, tell me something I don'tow." But I also wonder why NYPD blue always has that little notice about nudity and violence. But adCopy can pretty much give details about how Hugh Grant got busy with that hooker. Of course the uywh waxes Hugh's car gets to tell the story from his point of view, fifty stories up.
Then there are the talk shows. Rikki Lake, Jerry Springer, to name a couple. Every show has these te elements, a long haired, lower class trailer trash, does-construction-when-the weather's -nice gy He could also be some yo boy black guy, who belives that Louis Farakhan is the next Christ. The ecndis some twenty two year old( or younger) who has six kids. The third is the black girl in the udincewho confesses to smoking crack at nine years of age and saying, "Look at me, I'm in Jerry Spinge's adience." She turned out really well. Why are we obessed with this? We figure we shouldn'twatchNYPD lue because it has some violence. We all say that, but it's in the top ten ratings this eek. Bt usualy the kids would be falling asleep by then. But they're wide awake during the day an can wach all he talk shows. My point is, why are Beavis and Butthead being slammed while we can wtch someinbred, railer trash, hick asshole talk about how he cheated on his sister for his cousin. And we do't have ay disclaimers or Bob Dole expressing his ignorance to a show he knows nothing abut. Yeah, eaver and uttface
But not all talk shows are like this. Donahue has stuck to issues people actually care about and Op interviews the power rangers ( by the way, there's a Quarterflash video where these guys are on mtrycles and they're dressed like PRs). The other thing is that Oprea and Donahue were the first pepl t pioneer this format and it's worked for them. If it weren't for Donahue, Rikki Lake would be n asoa oprea, Jerry Springer would be doing the news, and everyone else would be dealing and doingdrug
Hard Copy and Inside Edtion are just plain out to discredit people. Who cares what Ellen Degernes d all day. Who gives a shit about some hick who can't count high enough to figure out how many timspr day he's sexually active with his fourteen year old girlfriend (two times a day is pretty goodthug). Hard Copy makes up half of their stories. Why are we subject to a bunch of lies about how furten ear olds, people my age, don't go to school. They go to the mall to drop acid. What a crock f crp.Wht mall isn't teaming with police who could pick out a kid who's high? Why do they make it ook lke Rih Kids on LSD ( fine punk, do try to pick up the CD) are advocates for acid? Why are pople tying t make you paranoid? Maybe if we boycott the show, whatever network they're on, will fially stp runnng it.
If I knew I'd tell you but for now I guess we have to weather the storm and just not watch any of tshows. Courtney Love said it best when she said," Who needs fame for fame's sake? who wants to takaout how you fucked your four year old kid?"
Nobody, Courtney, Nobody

R.E.M. Murmur
Once upon a time there was a great rock band called REM. Then they started to put us to sleep with omatic for the People and Out of Time. Then they give us their midlife crsis, Monster and are ripefrMTV's picking. Twelve years ago, however, Murmur was waking people up. True it didn't sell millinsofcopies, conquer the world, draw crowds of thousands or anyhting like that. But it beat out coporte rap like Micheal Jackson and U2 for the 1983 record of the year for Rolling Stone. All on a abelabou the size of Dischord. It wasn't cheap pop like Loverboy, and it wasn't metal lite like an Haen. I was alternetive,
but not the ure or Souixsie and the Banshees.
"Radio Free Europe" is probably the best REM song of all time. It's hard to describe. The guitar isiet and folksy, in fact there is very little guitar on this whole record. The drums are present an uiable. But they only make an impact in the final chrous. Mike sings like he's drunk, he's mumblngmoe than singing. Radio free europe is more of an idea than a song. I'm not sure where then concpt amefrom, but I reckon it's from WWII.
"Laughing" is very folky. Micheal is singing about finding a safe place to enjoy the dark humor whiour world is covered in ( got all that?).Communication is the dominant theme here. That's very strne because you'h have better luck figuring out "Endless Nameless" than "Perfect Circle" or "Shakin Trogh." However, "Radio Free Europe" itself represents a breakdown in communication, "Laughing" s tyin to communicate in a basic way and then "Talk about the Passion" finally comes to the secondmostcompex form of communication there is.
"Sitting Still" is a simple pop song. But the outro chrous is still, "I can hear you" Af wards if "9-9". The chrous here is, "Give me a cover/ don't give me a cover/the point we turn to isin /conversation fear" All of this talk of ccommunication seems approipate, since this is probaby hemost convincing and honest music REM has ever wrritten. It communicates it's message "the maistram eeds rebellion" lyrically and insturmantaly eaisly and persistantly. But the whole ablum dos no mak REM seem all serious and nerdy.
"We walk" kind of reminds me of "tounge" off of Monster. Here Mike sings complete nonsense in agh voice, against an almost laughable guitar part as well as what sounds like thunder crashing in h ackgorund. It' s a stupid little song, which lightens the moodiness and not seroiusness, but jut havy mood. The final offering is "West of the fields" A great melody, but I cannot figure out awor tat is said. The reason i can't hear Lou Koller's voice is because he sings too loud. I can'thearMichal Stipe's because he sings to soft.
Murmur is chock full of great music, dymanics (which is why the songs hit so hard), and convictiont has a timless sound and style and is deifnitly a break from punk without a break from punk ethic.Sve our music
We are all well aware that punk is dead. But it isn't gone. Gone would mean no Sick of It All, no Tl Chaos, No Bad Religon,
No Husker Du cover bands. I specualated tha tpunk would be backj home in a year, to the freaks like But it isn't. People still harass me about wearing an SST shirts and telling them that Green Day sabunch of lying punk sellouts. I had to explain to them that sellout is a person or band comprimss rtstic values for finincal ones. They just said I was an asshole and walked away to play a GreenDayCD t full volume.
My point is that we punks have to take our music back. If you like SST, get SST shirts. If you go t punk show and see someone is a Green Day shirt, give 'em a hard time. When you go to the CD stor,rp the Dookie covers off. Constantly quiz punks on the ethics. Reject posuers before they reject ou D not watch MTV (except for 120 minuites) and start your own militant hardcore band.
Read Maximum rock n' roll insted of Rolling stone. If you don't like punk, don't buy the CDs. We cat expect this commercialization of punk to just go away. We the people are stronger than all of th aor labels put together. Stronger than MTV and stronger than corporate magazines. Our forces are urdiizines, fanzines, labels and bands. Boycott major labels and corporate magazines. Punk is treny ad te proof is in the assholes who made fun of me for years for listening to Black Flag and Huskr Duare he same guys who like Offspring now. I am now declaring war on trendies, yuppies, pousers, confomists hipsters, and sellouts.
This is the closest thing you'll get to a cheat sheet for the punk ethos. read up.
