 Reporting for Duty!
 -------------------
In the spirit of the holidays, I hope everyone will forgive this
slightly smaller than usual issue. I had a minor hard disk
catastrophe to deal with in early December, and after dealing with
that the writing urge was somewhat sapped out of me.
Clearly this is a good place to remind everyone that submissions
are always welcome here! My addresses are at the end of the issue.
And lest I forget, greetings to the Berkeley Mac Users' BBS!

News from Over the Hailing Frequencies....
 ------------------------------------------
 FIRST, A CORRECTION
Last month, I reported that in the week of 10/25, TNG scored a
rating of 13.9 with the episode "Man of the People." That week was
 actually the week of "Relics."

 TNG AND DS9 SCHEDULES
(With thanks to UCLA Bruin of AOL for originally posting these.)
For TNG (dates are week of dates):
12/07: "Man of the People" (rerun)
12/14: "Chain of Command, Part I" (Picard on a spy mission)
12/21: "Chain of Command, Part II"
 12/28: "Relics" (rerun) (Scotty episode)
01/04: "Schisms" (rerun) (aliens from subspace experiment on
 crew)
 01/11: "True Q" (rerun) (Q and Amanda)
01/18: "Rascals" (rerun) (Picard et al turned into kids)
01/25: "Ship in a Bottle" (Barclay and Professor Moriarty both
 return)
 02/01: "Aquiel" (a Geordi episode)
02/08: "Face of the Enemy" (Troi negotiates a hostage release in
 Romulan space)
 02/15: "Tapestry"
02/22: "A Fistful of Datas" (rerun) (Western holodeck story)
02/29: "The Quality of Life" (rerun) (intelligent exocomps)

And now, DS9 (again, week of dates):
 01/04: "Emissary" (the two-hour premiere)
 01/11: "A Man Alone"
 01/18: "Past Prologue"
 01/25: "Babel"
 02/01: "Q Less" (features Q and Vash)
(There is a rumor that the week of 1/11 will be skipped, and the
regular episodes starting with "A Man Alone" will actually start on
1/18. I do not know at this writing what the truth of the matter
 is.)

 DS9 NOTES
According to November's "Film Score Monthly" magazine, a new
Trek theme for DS9 has been written by Jerry Goldsmith (Star Trek I).
Music for each ongoing episode will be done by TNGers Dennis McCarthy
and Jay Chattaway. (As originally posted to AOL by Arnold LS.)
More news about DS9 from Creation San Diego on November 8th,
where producers Ron Moore and Brannon Braga were speaking, as well as
 script coordinator Lolita Fatjo:
Ron Moore reports that the rumor running around (including in
last month's "Dateline") that Scotty will be in DS9 is not true, to
 his knowledge.
The old rumor about one of Guinan's children being on DS9 also
came up again, but no such character is in development at this point.
However, those we can expect on DS9 include Lursa and B'Etor
(the Klingon women from "Redemption") and Lwaxana Troi.
Keiko O'Brien also came up in discussion briefly; she will be
working as a schoolteacher on DS9.
On QVC, Michael Piller reported that a 2-parter will involve
Worf on DS9, investigating the possibility that his natural father
may in fact still be alive. (I think this was a TNG/DS9 crossover,
 but I'm not sure....)

 TNG RANDOM BITS
Also from Creation San Diego, a few more miscellaneous tidbits
 from Moore, Braga, and Fatjo:
Marina Sirtis, contrary to some rumors, is not pregnant.
Reconfirmation that there will be another Q episode this year.
(On QVC, Michael Piller reported that Q takes Picard back in time, to
when Picard had just graduated Starfleet Academy.)
The Romulans will be back for several episodes this season.
Lwaxana Troi will of course turn up this season as well. (Did
 you doubt?)
In the immediate future, the upcoming TNG two-parter "Chain of
Command" (mentioned here last month) got talked up a bit; Fatjo
called this "the ultimate Picard episode." (We shall see!) Michael
Piller also spoke highly of this one on QVC.

 THE PARAMOUNT HIERARCHY
In the Paramount corporate structure, Tom Mazza has been
promoted to Senior Vice President, Current Programs, within the
Television division. This makes him responsible for the "creative
and production management" of TV shows currently produced at
Paramount, which of course includes TNG and DS9.

"THE WHOOPI GOLDBERG SHOW": TAKING A RATING BEATING
Since premiering in September, "The Whoopi Goldberg Show" has
been packing little pop in the ratings, averaging about a 2
nationally. Several cities have pushed back the show's time slot in
reaction to that (Philadelphia, for example, is about to move her
show from 11pm to 12:30am). But everyone involved is committed for
completing a full season of the show, so a premature cancellation
 seems unlikely.

SISTER ACT AND THE FORTHCOMING SEQUEL
Columnist Marilyn Beck reports that filming of "Sister Act II,"
again starring Whoopi Goldberg, is scheduled to begin in March of
1993. Casting for other roles in the film is underway.
Meanwhile, the original film overall European debut in the first
week of December was a success. It topped the charts while taking in
$8.5 million. ("Sister Act" topped the European, British, and French
film charts that week, and placed second in Germany.)
"Sister Act" has also just opened in Australia and topped the
charts there as well, taking in $1.6 million.

 ONE LAST WHOOPI NOTE
Whoopi Goldberg has had to drop out of the HBO AIDS film "And
the Band Played On" (mentioned here last issue) due to an bronchial
 infection.

 SHATNER AND CBS: PERFECT TOGETHER
No, this item isn't about "Rescue: 911." Shatner will be
co-starring in a future CBS TV movie entitled "A Family of
Strangers." The film is based on a true story about a woman who,
while tracing her family medical history before an operation,
discovers she was adopted. (Melissa Gilbert stars as that woman.)
The film is now in production.

 THE SOFTWARE STANDINGS
On the bestseller charts of Software Inc. (a nationwide
retailer) for the week of November 29th, the "Star Trek Screen Saver"
was number six on the Productivity charts.

 Editorial: Taking the Plunge
 by Bill Mason
 ----------------------------
By the time the next issue rolls around, Deep Space Nine will
 have hit the airwaves.
Personally, my excitement is building. (I assume I'm not the
only one!) Obviously, I'm excited for any new Trek. But there is
 another reason.
Being a little too young to have watched Star Trek from the
beginning (I was born 3 days after "The Enemy Within"), I always find
it interesting to -- when the opportunity arises -- talk to someone
who has been with Trek since its debut. The "first generation" of
 Trekkers, as it were.
And while Classic Trek shall always hold a special place with
me, there was something about the premiere of Next Generation. Some
little part of me that could say, "This is my show." Something that
I could be in on from the word go, and watch grow, and take to heart
 as much as Classic Trek.
I've never asked anyone, but I've always wondered if others felt
 that way about TNG.
But I like to think that DS9 will do it again. Not only delight
all of us fans, but bring new people in who see this series as their
 stepping-stone into Trek.
I kind of like the thought.

Good Trek: What "Makes It So"? Part II
 by Bill Mason
 ---------------------------------------
As promised, we'll take a peek at what makes for good Trek --
good Next Generation Trek in this case.
As last time, these favorite episodes are purely mine alone and
you are cheerfully invited to disagree with them!
Since we looked at three Classic cast stories last month, we'll
examine three TNG stories this month.
My all-time personal favorite remains "Booby Trap," where Geordi
joins forces with a holodeck Leah Brahms to save the good ship
Enterprise. Partly because Geordi is one of my favorites among the
cast and this was probably his best episode. I also like it because
this one exemplified the "ensemble cast" approach that TNG has. In
its original draft, the script involved Captain Picard and a woman (a
real woman, not a holodeck persona) combining forces to save the
ship. But executive producer Michael Piller changed the story to
focus on Geordi, and bingo -- a great episode. A nice dramatic
finish with Picard making things happen at the helm caps the episode.
For a second choice, I'll back-track to the first season and
glom onto "11001001." A superb piece for Will Riker -- and probably
one of the most intelligent holodeck episodes done. Plus it boasts
one of Trek's unique and dramatic (in its own way) moments: the
evacuation of the Enterprise. The quiet frenzy of those minutes from
Data's abandon ship order to the end of the evacuation stand out in
 my mind.
Now, a third choice (boy, these are hard to pick).... I'll jump
in with "Disaster." I go for it because our ensemble cast gets
thrown into situations where they've never gone before (so to speak):
Picard trapped with three children, Troi sitting in command, Worf as
a supportive midwife, etc. And it works all around -- and even works
in Riker, Data, and Ro to good advantage.
What a shock, huh? I spend two months looking at the good Trek
stories, and find that they're all character stories. Guess that's
to be expected. |) But I hope you found this little look worth your
 while -- and your reading!

 Happy Birthday!

 Upcoming comic books of note:
"William Shatner's TekWorld" #6 (Marvel): This issue marks the

Jonathan Frakes, on the possibility of being typecast:
"One of the reasons I enjoy directing is that, should I get so
typecast that I don't get other work as an actor, hopefully I'll be
able to continue to direct and even produce," Frakes said in an
interview published Friday in the Nashville Banner.
"But then, Patrick [Stewart] and I felt that [William] Shatner
and [Leonard] Nimoy haven't done too badly. I wouldn't mind Nimoy's
 career."
(As quoted on the AP newswire)

"Chevrolet Treks into Next Generation with New Restyled Camaro"
(UPI headline on December 1st. Amusingly, the article reported
that BORG-Warner Automotive produces the transmission for this car.)
