								| | Report on appearance by Terry Farrell (DAX) at theReport on appearance by Terry Farrell at the Big E Con in Norfolk,Virginia, on 10/29/94, by Barbara S. Parker (Compuserve ID 71041,1517
 or Prodigy ID GGBX52B).

Once introduced to the stage a very energetic Ms. Farrell asked the
audience if they "knew the deal," meaning that she wanted the questions to
be asked clearly and as loud as possible. She didn't have her glasses on so
she could not see the people in the audience. She said that for some of the
answers she was going to lie [laughter from the audience] because
generally it can be more interesting than the truth. Some of the answers will
be the truth and might be interpreted as a lie, but she would mix it up so no
 one knew the difference.
She recently did "An Evening at the Improv," and said that "comedians
have it the worst." It is the most nerve-wracking thing." She was the host
and didn't have to make anyone laugh, but there are comedians who "rank
 you" through the monologue.
At this point an interpreter for the deaf was seated up on the stage for
the benefit of some audience members. This was only done during Ms.
Farrell's appearance that I know of.
How did she like working with Rodney Dangerfield and the movie cast?
Actually, they didn't do "a whole lot of working, that's why it was so much
fun!" They would work in the morning and rewrite at lunch, so Robert
Downey Jr., Terry and others would all go back to their trailers. After they
"got the hint" that they weren't going to work in the afternoons, they
decided it would be a "Miller time moment" at about three each day. It
 was great.
How did she feel in the episode where the symbiont was dying? "You
mean in 'Equilibrium?" asked Terry. It was great she said because she
found out she had a personality that was a murderer. The man who
portrayed the murderer is not an actor in "real life," but a magician. He
was doing tricks all the time. Terry never got to see any of them because
she was too busy working. It was a fun episode to do.
Someone asked if the writers actually have a list of Dax's past lives so
that Terry can better work the character. Terry said that she doesn't know
about all of them, but knows of at least nine bodies that Dax has been in so
far. "Dax has gotten around," she said. Now on the sexual side, "it's kind
of scary. Imagine how free you'd be after nine different lifetimes, NO
INHIBITIONS! Go baby!" She thinks the writers may be afraid to make a
list because it might trap the character. Not knowing any other other
women hosts is kind of frustrating she said.
A fan told Terry that his favorite episode was "Blood Oath." [applause]
He then asked Terry if she thought Dr. Bashir would ever get over his
crush on Dax? It's very depressing, but yes, he does. She said she "didn't
even have him for one night!" There's an episode called "Fascination"
where Majel (Barrett) "the singer she is" comes in and causes mischief
(Terry rolls her eyes). In another episode Dax does "go after" someone,
but we'll have to wait to see it to find out who.
A "Red Dwarf" fan wanted to know Terry's involvement in that series.
She did one pilot and then they replaced one of the characters. She
replaced the character of the cat. It's the number one sitcom in England,
but most Americans don't know about it. It may have been the fifth season
of the show that Terry did the promo for it. They didn't put much money
into and it doesn't pay to do a sci-fi half hour camera show. "The money
really doesn't work." The show makes the first Star Trek look really high
 tech. It was fun.
How much of Dax is part of Terry? Perhaps a little, but certainly not
when Dax is doing the technobabble. "Not at all!" said Terry.
Is there any truth to the rumors that either Colm Meaney or Avery
Brooks may be leaving the show? They'r both staying Terry said and
there's also no truth to rumors of tension and problems on the set.
Everyone took more time to get to know each other. The show has a
different filming atmosphere because of the action and the way the sets are
designed. Working on the set for such long hours leaves little time to joke
around. Everyone grew together and became friends slowly. Terry said
that now she can't even imagine not knowing Nana Visitor. She (Nana) is
such a great friend. It's very rare to develop such close relationships
working on a show for many years. These relationships go beyond the
 show.
On the lighter side, Terry was asked exactly where her (Dax's) spots
go? [laughter] "They go down my face, across my breasts, down the sides
of my stomach, down the sides of my legs all the way down to my little
 baby toe!" she said.
Which did she like working on, "Hellraiser III" or DS9? "Are you
serious?" she asked the audience member. "Oh, that is so easy. Do I really
need to answer it? Deep Space Nine! No, I'd really rather be chased by a
guy with pins in his face in the rain."
Why did they change Dax's hair in this season's opener? "Because Rick
Berman wanted it that way," she said. It had nothing to do with her. They
said we want you to have short hair and she said okay. After all he is her
boss and if he wants her to have short hair then she has short hair. How
did her hair get long again was the next question. "I know this is really
gonna throw you guys for a loop, but your're never gonna guess," she said,
"Rick Berman!" So now Terry is trying to grow her own hair out again.
Now she has to wear a wig on the set because when the hair was short they
had to cut it about a quarter of an inch in the back and an inch into her
 hairline.
Will Dax be socializing with the Ferengi in future episodes? She hopes
so because she hasn't seen much of Armin this year.
What does Terry think of being a Dax doll? She "thinks it's cool." Her
niece, Jenna, who will be 3 in January (the other niece, Brittany, will be 11
in December) lost her Dax doll. Terry never realized "how cool that doll
was until she lost me." Terry said, however, that her nose does not look
like that (the doll's). Her eyes aren't that gray either. It looks kind of evil
 she said.
Does Terry actually understand any of the technobabble? "Oh, no, I get
all my stuff," she said (rolling her eyes and smiling). Actually after awhile
you get used to it. It's when "they throw you a new one" that it gets
 difficult.
Would a female trill, if she met someone and got married, be able to
have a child while having a symbiont inside of her? "I guess when Terry
Farrell gets pregnant then Dax will have to deal with that," she said. "Or I
can be like Gates (McFadden) and they'll just hide me and I'll walk around
like this all the time (with an object obscuring the front of her body)."
She works five days a week. Sometimes on a Friday the work will go
into Saturday to around two or three in the morning and then they start
again on Monday at four (a.m.). The average work day for her is about
fourteen hours. In some heavier episodes it's fourteen to sixteen. A twelve
hour day is unheard of. The crew might have twelve hours but she has
fourteen with hair, makeup and everything else. The makeup itself takes
about forty minutes to put on if they have to hurry, otherwise it may take
and hour and a half because she chats with Mike Westmore.
Someone pointed out how the trill character's makeup had changed
from Next Generation to DS9. In the very first press shot for DS9 Terry
does have "the forehead," but the "camera blew it out." Apparently
Paramount didn't like the original trill makeup like they didn't like her short
 hair.
Michael O'Hare suddenly appeared on the side of the room (he was the
next scheduled speaker) and Terry started teasing him. She asked him if he
had a question for her. He said "just because you're as beautiful as you are,
are people threatened by the fact that you're also very bright?" "I don't
 think so," she said smiling.
