Thumbs down Calls to ban UFC in UK

Call to ban cage fighting event

A cage fighting event at Wembley Arena is facing calls to be banned because of its "ultraviolent" nature.

Bob Blackman, London Assembly member for Wembley, north London, said the "medieval human blood sport has no place in modern Britain".

Mixed martial arts combat is big business in the US and has grown in popularity in the UK in recent years.

Wembley Arena said the event will go ahead and measures were in place to ensure the safety of participants.

The tournament, called Cage Rage, combines elements from Thai Kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and freestyle Wrestling.

Each fight consists of three five-minute rounds taking place inside a cage ostensibly to stop the fighters falling out of the ring.

There is a full set of rules, and each bout is refereed.

Mr Blackman called on Wembley Arena to cancel the event as a gesture to local residents.

"The 'sport' of cage fighting offers no protection to its participants and it excites the worst sides of human emotion in those who watch it," he said.

A statement from Wembley Arena said it took the "utmost care to ensure the heath and safety of all participants, visitors and staff at any event staged at the arena".

Since they're going on banning stuff ..., when are they going to be banning criminals then?

What's really "ultraviolent" is what I would like to do to those blissninnies.

I don't believe anyone has ever died in MMA competitions in the US. Have they?

That's got to be one of the dumbest things I've ever heard.

"Hey lets transfer guns solely into the hands the criminal minority, thus creating a climate of violence, then lets ban ever concievable thing that could be used as a constructive outlet for violence! What could go wrong?"

I'm glad we're not there yet, though Obama has the Oprah vote, which worries me mightily.

Fix'd

As for people dying in mma, no ones ever died in a sanctioned mma fight. there was one in russia or somewhere over there where a dude died. But it wasn't sanctioned from what I hear.

Is it just me, or has the UK gotten exceptionally milquetoast, even by their usual standards, in about the last five years?

A simple hint to all easily-offended Brits (and everybody else, of whatever nationality): if you don't like something, don't watch it. Don't try and ruin everyone else's fun just because you have your panties in a twist over something you personally find distasteful.
