i just installed the new intel drivers to replace the i810 for my 915 chipset in my widescreen laptop. i have new resolution options in preferences but if i select the new ones it goes to terminal and kicks me back to logon screen.can any of you guys help me with this?i really wanna start playing starcraft again but i need 640x480.
you could try reconfiguring your xorg.conf file
go to a terminal and type

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
it may look a little intimidating, but its pretty straightforward, just select what your screen resolution is when it asks, and use the i810 driver when it asks you to select it
i had your same problem and that worked for me
well,now i reverted back to i815 with the 910resolution hack.still doesnt work for some reason.i've added more resolutions in xorg.conf but i still only see the 1280x768 and 1024x768 in the "screen resolution" screen. i just need that option to change to 640x480 when i need to play starcraft. i don't want my computer having that resolution all the time. also for some reason i see a "sensor limit - fail" on bootup. im not sure if it has anything to do with that.

I am having (almost) the same problem as the OP, I am using Ubuntu, and I need to set the resolution to 1280x1024, but it the maximum I can set it to via "Screen Resolution Prefrences" is 1024x768.

yeah try dpkg-reconfigure if all u wanna do is change ur default resolution. i tried it once and i think it crashed me back to terminal after logon. ehh try it anyway it might work for you. just make sure u make a back up
fucking a i still can't figure it out. i've been checking out other forums but i think everyone is having there own almost similar problems and can't figure out how to fix them. damnit all i need is a working option to switch to 640x480...fuckkkk
i think i may have figured it out
when you go through the reconfiguring, when it asks you to select what resolutions you would want available, make sure you have 640x480 available
