Someone i know wants to try this, but isn't sure if it'll work. Can you get change in cash for buying with a gift certificate? Or does the amount used just get deducted from the gift certificates balance?

Also he is not sure how this actually works with the check. Does he fill it out with false information, and the check is not validated when it is used as payment for the gift certificate?

Yea, with gift certificates, you just get the amount deducted from the card. So, say you bought the .50 cent bookmark on the $50 card, you would just get a card worth $49.50. Not cash. But hey, then you got a free gift card to the store that you ripped off. Not all bad.

if you have a stolen checkbook, why even bother getting a gift card? why not just buy shit with the checks?

though times have changed since 1991. i'd suspect even bookstores ask for ID, or don't accept checks.
