Amphetamine studies

Hello everybody

I'm currently looking for studies on amphetamines (can be methamphetamines too) because I want to understand how the drugs really damage the body, because as for now, much of the damaging effects I've seen comes with the lifestyle of the user (like malnutrition, lack of sleep, using needles to inject, etc) and not necessarily with the use of the drug.

People say meth damage brain, but as for now, I haven't seen something that clearly states this. What I've read is that the adulterants used to cut the amps may cause stroke when injected or may cause brain damage, but I can't find something that makes a direct link between use and brain damage.

I've also checked erowid, but I'm really looking for studies to kind of understand the whole thing. I know there might not be tons of studies on this substance, but ho well...

So if a kind soul here could give me a link or two to a good, and neutral, study... I would appreciate it.

Run a google search on "amphetamine dopamine receptor damage." That returned quite a few for me.

Thanks, I've gone through a few of them and it's good informations.

My goal is to find what are the "permanent" damages of amphetamines, and if there is no permanent damages, how long does the damages last.

There's many studies, and most of them are vague about this. They talk about damages, but doesn't tell if these damages heals after a day or after a decade.

So if someone have an answer to that, feel free to post. Because I'm kind of lost for now, it's been 3 hours reading different studies and articles, and I'm still in the dark.

Thanks for that quote, but that's not really what I'm looking for.

Especially when people 40 years old die from heart stroke, and 96 years old people die from lungs failure and still have a good heart.

I know amphetamines put stress on the heart, but I'm wondering how it's damaging it. When you run, your heart rate increase, but I haven't seen people die from running each morning for a year.

Now, if someone has some scientific data on that, I'm all hear.

excercise for the heart just like running.

the damage the dopamine receptors in your brain, and if you abuse stimulants too much, you will never feel pleasure again

...by my humble understanding, all neurotoxicity arises from secondary Ca++-mediated secondary glutamergic exiotoxicity arising from the drastic increase in dopaminergic input of the VTA into the nucleus accumbens, and - like most glutamergic exiotoxicity - can be blocked by any glutamate antagonist active at the NMDA receptors, or by adequate intake of magnesium.

...the primary metabolite of meth/amphetamine is para-hydroxy(meth)amphetamine, an MAOI-inhibited analog of the cardioexiotoxin tyramine. For info on exactly what it does, a google search regarding its analogs may be in order - "tyramine pressor" or "MAOI tyramine." For more info on the metabolite itself, shulgin's entry on PMA in PIHKAL gives some interesting information in the "extentions and commentary" section.

...hopefully, this should answer a few of your questions and give you a starting place for your search.
