The story of creation with Adam and Eve seemed to be attempting to explain several things, such as why human women have painful and dangerous childbirths, why snakes have no legs and people hate them, why the world wasn't perfect if their all-powerful God had created it, etc.
If you're wondering why it is that women have painful childbirth, it's because our hips aren't wide enough and babies' heads are too big. Wide hips aren't good for running with two legs, and big heads and long gestations are necessary for good brain development. The two evolutionary trends together are working against the need for mothers to give birth safely.
The tree of knowledge of good and evil appears to be an explanation for why humans have a conscience, feeling guilt and shame and have a knowledge of morals while animals don't (supposedly). Also, why humans wear clothes and feel embarrassment when naked.
Modern Christians have an additional meaning attached to it, though.
