I agree with midvalley, a potato gun is just the thing for what you describe, if you drilled multiple holes in a pipe and capped the end before burying it in the sand you could then fill it with butane at a concentration of 4%.

To do this just fill the pipe with water, measure the water and use a cheap syringe off ebay to meter the gas, it helps if you create a jet at the end to mix the gas properly. When I built my cannon I used the screw on caps that came with it.

If you don't feel like shelling out for a BBQ igniter get a cheap lighter and hold it by the hole you used to inject the butane.

If you have a good camera you should be able to capture the sequence of explosions otherwise it will look instantaneous.

woo hoo i r smart lol anyway if you want something a little easier compressed air tank i.e. paintball tank or air compressor and a butterfly valve will help with the psi but you wont have the flame from your explosion ... either way potato gun ftw

is it possible to ignite it from a distance with some kind of cord or anything that can make a spark by clicking something

i kinda want to have lots in the ground, igniting at different times without close ups, just a wide view of the chaos with people fighting around

Look up stuff on remote det, or ematch.

Pretty much just take your device, and run nichrome wire through the fuse, then from there to a cord, from the cord to a switch in a little box, and from the box to a power supply.

Obviously you need to have a few extra safety features, added switches etc, but thats the gist of it.

I remember when I made my first one, from an old atari console, and everyone yelled at me for wasting an atari.

And when I make them, I like to have the connecting points be 120v wall sockets from an extension cord. That way, you can add as much or as little extra cord as you need simply by plugging it in.

pretty easy to rig up a spark plug to the gun and just nigger rig it with standard power cord to an outlet with a push button or switch in the way fuses and all that are smart but come on how often do things go wrong

depending on your budget compressed gas would be more effective and cheaper in the long run for multiple fires although i do be leave that several perhaps 8 e-fired mortars slighlty under the sand about 18 - 22 inchs in length with a 3-4 inch plug and some black powder maybe what your looking for perhaps with a land mine effect you can place them in a circle slightly bigger and deeper in the middle and smaller on the outer with a small loose BP change in the middle to give a smoke / flame effect ..

if you have the time say a few weeks to study and test small amounts of organic peroxides such as MEKP or AP "Methyl Ethyl Ketone Peroxide" or Acetone Peroxide both which are generally unsafe primary explosives but easy to make

i would also look into AN or Ammonia Nitrate a great heaving explosive which is you got a good back to dig a descent hole a small 1.5 kilo AN charge under a few feet of sand will lob it okish and leave a OK crater .. more info on the scenes and the effect need will be easyer to design somthing for

Anyone ever seen the WWII film/series "Band of brothers?" Excellent stuff, the artillery blasts were done by burying tubes filled with dirt/sand in the ground then blowing them out with quick blasts of compressed air. Easy to make and very impressive and realistic.

Now that you mention it, why not pressurize a bottle with dry ice ala Tzar (to a safe level) and then bury it. The bottle is then ruptured with a small amount of electrically initiated AP or similar.

Propane thing is probably safer though since you'd be creating a minefield of sorts with organic peroxides buried around...
