Final Exam Essay
Some say love is what makes the world go round. People will do anything to impress the opposite sex. Yet, In life, love can kill. Since the main theme of Romeo and Juliet is love, it is easy to tie it to that. But what does love got to do with Of Mice and Men?
In Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the 2 main characters are in a forbidden love.
Both Romeo and Juliet would die for this forbidden love. They loved each other so much, that they died because they couldn’t be together. Why? Simply because they couldn’t live without the partnership of one another. They had the mentality that when one of them died, a part of them died. They simply could not go on with out that piece of them.
They needed each other to comfort one another. They needed each other.
In Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, Lennie and George travel around together looking for jobs. They have this plan, in which they will get a little place and live of the
”fatta the land”. Lennie getting in trouble, and them having to run always ruins the plan. No one in their right mind would put up with this, unless they loved Lennie. Lennie never meant to do the things he did, and maybe it was his innocence that kept George with him. George is protective of Lennie. In the end, George ends up killing Lennie. George wanted to do this, because Curley would of caused pain when he did it. This killed George inside, but he had to do it. He did this out of love. George killed Lennie physically, while Lennie killed George mentally.
While love may make the world go round, It can also be an ugly thing. Romeo killed himself when he thought Juliet was dead. Juliet then woke up and saw that Romeo was dead, and stabbed herself. In Of Mice and Men, George shot Lennie to kill him humanely. Curly would of shot him in the gut to cause him pain, when Lennie didn’t mean any harm to his wife. Lennie was going to die either way, so George killed him with love in the back of the skill. In conclusion, love can be a beautiful thing. But if you’re not careful, it could come bite you in the butt.
