What you should know about daycare for children
Choosing A Day Care Center
There is no way to absolutely insure that the day care center, in
which you enroll your children is safe. These safeguards will
help.
1. Take your children only to a licensed center. Santa Clara
County Licenses are good for three years and inspectors make at
least one unannounced visit during that time. Applicants for the
free license are fingerprinted and checked for police records,
they also have to take a tuberculosis test. The facility is
checked for health and safety violations. A license is not a
guarantee, but it does offer much more security than a day care
center without one.
2. Check with the licensing agency to see whether any complaints
have been filed against the operator. The files are public
record. Some are licensed by the state and some by the county
department or social services.
3. Interview the operator regarding policies on discipline, play
activities, naps, outings, and staff. Obtain and check
references.
4. Monitor the center on your own and make unannounced visits.
Watch how your children play and behave at the facility. Do not
leave your children at any center which does not welcome parental
observation at any time.
5. Pay attention to what your children say about the care
received at the center.
6. Be very sensitive to a child's refusal to go to a day care
center. Talk with your child to find out why he/she does not want
to go.
